Lets Play The Celibrity Change Game

By Bob D. Caterino
Jan. 13, 2006

I always wonder why the things are the way that they are. Oh, I know what you are thinking, "What is he talking about this time?" Or "There he goes again." This time I will make my point perfectly clear. Celebrities are just that because of what they do. I understand how hard it is to "MAKE IT" and when they do they are usually set for life.

This always freaked me out. Why would one, who has made it, in anything that they wanted so much, would decide to do something else at the peak of their popularity? Going back many years Red Buttons a veteran comedian, arrived at the top of his game would want to try his hand at serious acting. He then must have wanted to be a magician because after that he disappeared. Many people in the media are doing this. Louie Anderson was gaining popularity then poof he was gone. He decided to become a ranting maniac about the abuse he suffered and even wrote a book about it. Then Louis was seen on "The Family Food for a moment then gone again. Jessica Simpleton, oops I mean Simpson decides that she wants to be an actress now. Poof another one bites the dust, or in her case she just bites.

Ringo Starr did this in another way. He decided to become a Beatle and then later on in life wanted to try his hand at acting. Seinfeld ended a million dollar an episode television to do his stand up again and for what??? I just don't know.

If these people and you know there are many, many more of them out there, remembered the struggle they went through to get where they had gotten in the first place they would remain where we put them and be happy, but NO...

Eddie Murphy was very funny. He made me spit milk through my nose once. Then he wanted to become a serious actor and if that wasn't enough, a singer. Poof he is gone.

I am no exception of the rule. I once had a great job doing stand up as well as television writing. I decided to become a novelist and Poof.

Let's give a big hand to some others that have decided they were better then we said they were. Topher Grace, Ron Howard, Gopher from love boat, Sting, Steve from Blues Clues, Andy Kaufman before he died of course and a host of others that decided they were too good for there craft. Bravo to all of you in the career move. You all made smart choices, and if you are listening to your agents then shame on you.

It all boils down to this. I didn't go to the rock show to hear Korn sing opera, I didn't go to the comedy club to see Carlin do Shakespeare and I certainly did not go to the clubs to see Robin Williams at all for anything.

Well that's all I have to say about this for now. I know when I send this off for all to read I will think of many others that decided to change what they do best for a path towards nothingness. Can you think of any??? I bet you can.
