Apostolic Testimony Part Two - 2 Peter 3: 15-16

“Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do other scriptures, to their own destruction.” (2 Peter 3: 15-16) NIV

Peter writes that every day the Lord holds back his judgment is a day of salvation for someone. It is one more day of opportunity and possibility that souls will find sanctuary in the blood of Jesus.

Peter confirms Paul’s letters as “wisdom that God gave him”. This wisdom permeates all of Paul’s writings and supports everything Peter has written in his letters.

Peter writes that “some things [that] are hard to understand” and this has been true since the very first prophecy spoken by a man of God. To this day Paul’s letters are greatly misunderstood.

Some would write to suggest Paul was “creating a new religion” rather than confirming the fulfillment of prophecies spoken long before. Others take the testimony of Luke concerning Paul and claim Luke a fabler and a speaker of myth, rather than a scribe, historian and physician.

Only the ignorant and unstable choose to distort the historical testimony of eyewitnesses. That is not surprising either.

Look at recent history and the attempts to claim the Holocaust a myth or the attack on the World Trade Center was a plot of the Jews. Those who write that God was not in the thoughts of America’s founders have not read the founders nor understood their personal thoughts of God. The distortions seem endless.

Paul was an Apostle because he could be. He had the background that enabled him to put the prophets together with the actions of Jesus and prove the obvious conclusion that Jesus was and is Son of God and God the Son. Peter confirms Paul’s writings as equal to all other scripture being questioned and distorted.

When you see the writings of Peter, John and Paul being attacked as they sometimes viciously are do not be concerned or surprised. Their words of testimony have been attacked from the very minute they were uttered and written because those who knew the truth could not afford to have it voiced abroad that their religious structures held no power to give eternal life to anyone.

Only the blood of the resurrected Jesus could grant eternal life to the believer. Everything else was a human invention of religion or the humanitarianism without the true God.

The written testimony of Peter is sure: “We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.” (2 Peter 1: 16)
