Jan. 12, 2006 Stephan Harpur at the time of writing is 10 or so points ahead in the polls regarding the upcoming Canadian General Election. Two years ago I predicted he would win the Federal election -I was wrong, however I didn't despair. Politics are not specifically the arena of the politician. For a while they are allowed to think that political strategy, campaigns, lobbying and such decide how people will vote but when things get serious, biology takes over. Crowds have a built in consciousness. They can be coaxed into taking the view that all history prior to the sixties is irrelevant and that they can ignore the restraints built into society regarding abortion, divorce, the sanctity of private property etc if it benefits them while at the same time causing no ill effects. When things begin to unravel people become immune to the type of reasoning encouraging behavior destructive to the general good and elect those who will re-impose the previous restraints. No type of political posturing, the writing of philosophical tracts, be they visual or print, or any other such forms of coercion have any real effect. We are at the moment witnessing this as the campaigns of the Canadian Federal election unfolds. Toronto, long the arbiter of who will or will not rule, is at the moment abandoning its position as the imposer of the liberal party of Canada upon the Canadian people and are now favouring liberal Stephan Harpur, along with the rest of the country outside of Quebec. The recent rash of gang violence in the city has opened peoples eyes, no amount of political rhetoric, beyond stopping it, having any effect. ------------ About the author: Read Mike Harans essays on history at http://www.geocities.com/manzikertca/ Email: manzikertca@yahoo.com Comment on this article here! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com.
