Jan. 11, 2006 The first Amendment of our Constitution says; "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press, or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for redress of grievances." Above taken from http://fact.trib.com As we can clearly see the rights or free speech, etc. are granted to citizens of the United States equally and without regard for party. However, this past week in numerous speeches across the Mid-West President Bush as attempted to define what speech he finds acceptable. President Bush said before a group of Veteran's (1/11/06, author AP Jennifer Loven, "Bush Urges Unity to Clear Hurdles in Iraq") that the Democratic Party's talk about how the progress in Iraq is less than glowing is "comforting our adversaries" and that the democrats will suffer in November due to their outspokenness. Furthermore, Bush said "In a free society, there's only one check on political speech and that's the judgment of the American people...that they should hold elected officials to account and demand debate…". I find this line of thought somewhat contradictory to what he just said about the Democrats speech-what about you? How can voicing your opinion about how things are going in Iraq being comforting the adversaries? I think it is realistic. Most news accounts have stated that there are mounting insurgency attacks and thus the death toll on both sides is also mounting in Iraq. Bush did not contest this and even went so far as to say that there may be more before he can claim this is a win-win war. So if this is the truth about the situation over there how can telling the truth be "comforting our adversaries"? If President Bush wishes that the people "hold their elected officials in account" for what is going on over in Iraq and for the information that was used to get us into the war in the first place how can he side-step his culpability there? If there is contradictory information submitted to the American people and they determine that the information that led to this war was trumped up and largely false don't we all have a right to ask why and to demand the truth? Is this not a right granted under the Constitution of the United States? The White House has previously singled out both Murtha and Dean as being the most outspoken against the war with Iraq admonishing their comments in kind and claiming "Victory". Many Republican's have likened the debate against the war to being soft on communism and borderline traitor. That is their right accorded under the First amendment, even if I beg to differ on this point. Democrats say that Bush should not be the one to determine what talk is acceptable and what is not on this hot topic and I agree. Speech is speech and one may not like what the other is saying, but to limit or control what another says is nothing short of an abridgment of our civil liberties.
