Jan. 11, 2006 There are many constants in our lives and for each of us they are different. They could be such things as being awakened by the radio alarm clock or seeing one of your parents peruse the daily newspaper at the breakfast table every morning. Upon becoming an adult and having your own life and home, you too subscribe to the daily paper in your area just like your parents did. It was one way your parents kept informed of the goings on around them and you know it will serve you in the same fashion as well. Lately I have been hearing some people complain about an unwillingness to read the newspaper because of all the bad news it contains. Something which could make some of us wonder, what did they expect pages upon pages of only good news? Whatever happened to wanting to be informed about the good things as well as the bad? Don’t some of these individuals who are resolute not to read certain sections of the paper think there should be some balance? What if there was no bad news to report and all the things we read about in the paper were all good? Would that really be such a good thing? What if something of a sinister nature occurred close to where you live and you wanted more information about the event, information you might not be able to find on the internet. Would it make you feel better knowing that only feel good stories were included in the paper? Bad things do happen, it’s a part of life. It does not necessarily mean that if you were to read about some thought provoking incident in the newspaper you have to dwell on it until it makes you depressed or filled with fear. Those news pieces are there to give us, the readers, further details about whatever incident occurred. Newspapers have been reporting both good and bad news since its introduction into the world. Sometimes it is difficult to sit by without reacting and listen to others say they do not read the daily paper anymore because it contains too much bad news. It’s much more than that. It’s giving us all who dare to read it everyday a dose of reality. Reading about good things that have taken place is fine, for that is also part of our reality, but if we were to all close our eyes and ears when something bad takes place, what kind of world would this become? It will turn into a world in which ignorance of important parts of reality will rule the day. What if the newspaper contains a piece about a criminal mastermind who is committing deeds in your area, but since you do not read that section of the paper you are unaware of such knowledge. Thought provoking, isn’t it? Life is a balanced entity. If there is good, there is also bad lurking around the corner. Newspapers report both sides to inform us and keep us up to date of the events that are taking place in our world. Reading about those events in the daily paper is your choice. Would you rather be informed or left in the dark? It’s up to you. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
