Jan. 5, 2006 At the beginning of 2005 President Bush's approval rating was 52%. However, by the end of the year it had sunk to somewhere in the 30's. Let's take a trip back through 2005 and see why this may be the case. Many herald the first election in 50 years for the people of Iraq as a major milestone in our war efforts over there. While I do not wish to diminish their votes I would like to point out that things over there have worsened instead of becoming better and that this vote has done little to quell that widespread violence and rising death toll. In October of 2005 we marked the 2,000 plus soldiers killed in Iraq. This number does not take into account those that die after taking some form of treatment nor those that have sustained sever and debilitating injuries that handicap the remainder of their young lives. This number does not tally the Iraqi death toll. To this President Bush's mantra is merely "...We will never back down, we will never give in..”. I say it is time that he (Bush) faces the music and acknowledges that this war was a big mistake and one that we can and will never win! As with most people that have attended and graduated from Business School (including and not limited to myself and G.W. Bush) there comes a point in all careers when decisions dictate that you know when to cut your loses and move on-we have reached that point and beyond with this war with Iraq. Bring our troops home! Sandra Day-O'Connor retired. Justice Reinquest died. Bush put forth some capable and others mired in doubt from both parties as potential replacements. Some nominees from his camp were; Anthony Kennedy, Alberto Gonzalez, Samuel Alito, Harriet Miers, and John Ashcroft. Some passed with flying colors and little discussion. Others cast serious doubt on President Bush's judgment and nominating ability; leaving us to scratch our heads and wonder what was he thinking. During the 2000 Debate President Bush said "I don't believe in liberal activist judges. I believe in strict constructionists. And those are the kind of judges I will appoint.” He (Bush) has made no secret of his stance on Roe vs. Wade and I feel that he may be setting up the Supreme Court to overturn this piece of valuable legislation that preserves the woman's right to choose. This would be a huge mistake. Since 2001 there have been over 40 businessmen and people convicted for various transgressions that had personal affiliations with President Bush or people within his administration. Sources close to this issue say there may be as many as 20 more including Senator Tom DeLay and Scooter Libby. President Bush approached the Supreme Court and asked them to quash these indictments; 2 out of 9 were in his favor. During Clinton's tenure there were a mere 4 prosecutions! In October of 2005 our Federal debt reached the $7.384 Trillion dollar mark! Our US Treasury Department asked Congress for the third time in three years to increase our borrowing ceiling. This debt is largely due to this ill-fated war with Iraq. Truth of the matter is that it will take us decades to get out from under this extraneous debt. In a news conference on September 4, 2004 President Bush said "Because we have acted, our economy is growing ..Our economic recovery plan is working.” However, according to the AFL-CIO (September 5, 2004) there have been 1.7 million jobs lost since President Bush took office. Does this look like growth to you? I hope that 2006 fares better than the previous year. However, with Bush sitting in the Oval Office I have serious doubts that this is a realistic outlook. Onward and upward-we hope!
