Keeping A Diary, Is It Worth The Effort?

By Judy Ramsook

With the Christmas season just over, many of you probably received a variety of presents. Some of those gifts may have been diaries, that come in an assortment of styles and designs. A few of these designs are unique and appealing to the eye. Coming equipped with such things as ribbon page markers and hard covers, they can arouse curiosity in anyone who happens to spot one in the privacy of one’s room. I have always thought that it would be sort of interesting to keep a diary.

Furthermore, I once read a book that was written in the form of a diary, something I found to be quite intriguing and interesting. Intriguing enough to think of having one, the type with the lock and key that is.

The reason for this is simple. The curious nature of humans. Some of whom feel they just have to take a peek at some one else’s private thoughts and ideas the moment the owner of the diary has turned his/her back. To make matters even worse, some one who has had the audicity to peruse some one else’s diary might even utter something he or she read in it during a casual conversation.

Something that leaves you, the writer of the diary open and vulnerable to a few frowning faces and embarrassed looks. Especially if there are other people in the room at the time whatever startling revelation about you is made.

In addition, something else has occurred as well. You are now aware that some one has indeed been betraying your trust and good nature by reading your diary, something you thought was there just for your pen and your eyes only.

Feeling betrayed and angry, you try distancing yourself from that diary and person and as you do that you begin to wonder, was keeping a diary such a wise choice anyway? No matter who you are and where you are are, long after you have left this plane of existence, some one, most likely a family member, will find your diary. You could conceal it in the darkest corner of the attic or closet, there will always be some one who will come along and locate it.

At the time of such an event, and that individual begins to read it, he or she might discover things only the pages of that diary knew about. Would it matter then? No, because you will no longer be here in the flesh to either defend your comments or answer questions that have gone unanswered when you were here.

Everyone wants to leave something behind, and keeping a diary is just one of those ways to do so. At least so that your surviving family members and friends can learn more about you long after you have gone, for no one knows us as completely as we would like to think they do.

As to some one else finding and reading your diary while you are still around? I guess it’s just one of those things we will have to tolerate. Or it could be one way of telling who cares about you enough to really respect your privacy and who does not.
