The Truth On Media Bias

By Jack Lepiarz
Jan. 3, 2006

People have accused the media of having a liberal slant for as long as I can remember. Pundits like Ann Coulter and VBernard Goldberg have both written bestselling books railing the so-called "liberal media," going as far as to accuse liberalism of being a mental disease. Worse yet is that this farce is believed by many Americans, and several columnists on Useless-Knowledge.com. I hate to burst your bubble, guys, but the concept of a liberal-run media is far from the truth.

First of all, the sheer enormity of conservative press goes to show that liberals do not run the media, as many Republican politicians often claim in an attempt to "work the refs," as former Republican Party chair Rich Bond said during the 1992 election. Furthermore, Patrick Buchanan has also come out and said that he has "gotten balanced coverage, and broad coverage--all we could have asked. For heaven sakes, we kid about the 'liberal media,' but every Republican on earth does that." With conservative bases like Fox News (particularly Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity), "The Situation," The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, Rush Limbaugh, and many others, it is impossible not to see that there is an extraordinarily active conservative media. Eric Alterman, columnist for The Nation and weblogger for MSNBC even said, "I work in the middle of it [the media], and so do many of my friends. And guess what? It's filled with right-wingers." If the media were really liberal, the various hypocrisies of hundreds of Republicans would have been exposed a long time ago. If the media were really liberal, then Tom DeLay wouldn't have gotten away with calling Michael Schiavo's pulling the plug on his wife "an act of barbarism," when he himself had done the same thing to HIS brain-dead father in 1988.

Obviously, there are facets of liberal press. The New York times and CNN are just two of the Republicans' favorite attack points. The success of Al Franken's books and Air America goes to show that there is some liberal media. But is it in control? Good God, no. Most of radio is run by the right wing. Any attempt to say that Fox News in anything other than conservative is clearly and utterly false. Trying to say that men like Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity are "fair and balanced" is silly. Hannity, nothing more than a Rush Limbaugh wanna-be, can't seem to stop lying (and I mean outright lies that any journalist who had done their homework would realize were lies), and Bill O'Reilly's "No Spin Zone" is nothing more than a slap in the face. A "No Spin Zone?" What about accusing John Kerry of voting to raise taxes 350 times (FALSE)? Look, I don't care if you watch conservative news. Really, I don't. But to watch conservative news and then say that it is fair and balanced? Wake up.
