Jan. 3, 2006 I love reading the ongoing debates in here about whether Jesus Christ is still alive or if Christianity is a valid belief based on any kind of evidence. Yes, it is intriguing to see BOTH sides argue their points with a great deal of passion as though they are winning their particular argument. After reading all the essays, I have come to KNOW two things. No one is going to change anyone's mind and these arguments are a waste of time. You cannot debate a subject on two different planes of thought. It is impossible. It would be like arguing which is a better sport, football or baseball. It cannot be accomplished. To truly debate a subject there has to be common ground. That does not exist here. Science, for the most part, is a fact-based study. It only requires faith when you have to swallow its many views on the beginning of man and evolutionary theory. You need a tremendous amount of faith to buy any of the open-ended data that leaves too many gaps to accept wholeheartedly. There is a "missing link" for example, that any scientist will tell you is still MISSING! And, the age-old argument, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" has still not been answered. That is WHY it is an age-old argument and will continue to be so. Christianity does have some solid facts of its own that can be proven. There was a race named the Jews who did wander in the desert. There was a man named Jesus Christ who lived in and out of Jerusalem and his identity has been confirmed by Roman and Jewish historians, not just Jimmy Swaggert. The Ten Commandments may be shuttled from one government site to another, but one has to admit they are pretty darn accurate when it comes to listing the flaws of human nature. But, Christianity and one's relationship with Christ is FAITH-based at its core. You cannot argue one's belief system or experience. I had mine in 1969, at my dining room table, when my best friend, Michael Burke shared with me the good news that I could experience a relationship with God through His only Son, Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for my sins. I cannot prove that with an eloquent essay in here, nor would I ever want to do that. What would be the point? Besides, I believe that it is God the Holy Spirit who prompts a man or a woman to consider salvation, not the clever words of a literary wordmaster or the fiery sermon of a great orator. The truth is, if God does exist, he certainly does NOT need me to believe in Him or accept Him to be more real. He already knows his own identity. He is not the one who needs saving. Granted, there have been many dark moments in Christianity from the murderous Crusades to the corrupt Popes to Jim Bakker et. al. But, these are not flaws of Christianity, these are sins of human nature. Greed, corruption, sexual impropriety, financial fraud are not the sole property of those who say they follow Christ. These actions are true across the boards of all societies, beliefs, religions and cultures. If you want to write why scathing articles berating Christians, people who believe as Christians or why the entire history of man has been warped by a dead Jesus, so be it. But, you are not going to shake me or any other believer in Christ one iota. We have personally met Jesus and we love Him. He has changed our lives. No argument or criticism can change that passion we have for Him. Yes, we believe He is alive and that He will eventually return as a victorious Lord and Savior who will judge the living and the dead forever. In the meantime, I will continue reading all the intelligence on both sides as you try to convince each other who is right and who is wrong about Jesus, Christianity, religion, science, evolution and why both sides are poop heads.
