Jan. 3, 2006 People of faith believe that God wrote or "divinely inspired" the Holy Scriptures, unfortunately there is not one but many books that are said to be authored by the Almighty. The Koran, the Bible, the Book of Mormon, The Bhagavad Gita, The Veda and countless other holy books make incompatible claims about how we must all live. One man's holy book is another man's fable. Despite the ecumenical efforts of many well-intentioned clerics, these incompatible religious doctrines inspire an ungodly amount of human bloodshed. 9/11 is not an aberration, history is replete with horrors that were inspired by religion. Religion, it could be argued, is the source of most evil in the world, but in an effort not to offend, many intelligent individuals refrain from criticizing the inane notions of organized religions. We argue vociferously over politics, popular entertainment, sports and almost everything else, but when it comes to religion we suddenly go mute. Your co-worker joins the Universal Church of the Flying Saucer, and inquires if you are interested in worshipping the Mother Ship. Instead of calling him a lunatic, you politely decline, and wish him good luck in his new faith. We must not hesitate to criticize not only the policies and politics of organized religions, but also their absurd dogmas. If a religious belief goes contrary to common sense and the rules of physics, I won't shy away from calling it malarkey. Why is calling someone "religious" universally regarded as a compliment. To be religious, more times than not, is not a good thing, it tends to breed arrogance and intolerance. Substitute the word "religious" with political and you will see how ridiculous this idea is. "My neighbor is a very good man, after all, he is very political." If your neighbor's political ideology inspires him to work for human rights, then it's a blessing, but if his politics inspires him to acts of discrimination, then it's not. I applaud the writers on this forum who aren't afraid to criticize "pie in the sky" religions that fleece their followers and condemn unbelievers. If only people worshipped a high school science text book as "The Word of God", the world wouldn't be in such a horrible bloody mess. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes has written over 200 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
