Hold Your Horses On Iraq

By Craig Chamberlain
Feb. 28, 2006

For once it seemed that the pessimists were actually smiling. Finally they were going to get what they wanted. A civil war in Iraq, and humiliation of President Bush to boot. If only the Iranians would nuke one of our cities they would be in absolute heaven. After all, they said it would never work. Someone who isn't white or christian could never understand something like the rule of law, majority rule, and peaceful transfer of power. (All right, they never said it in so many words. But it wasn't hard to read between the lines.)

The destruction of the Dome of the Rock, one of the holiest places in Shiite Islam looked as if this were going to ignite the powder keg. After all if this didn't do it nothing would. And the Shiites have reacted with anger. As most people would if they saw someplace holy to them violated. I can't imagine Catholics taking the destruction of the Vatican quietly, or Mormons not making a peep if someone blew up the Salt Lake City Temple.

But what needs to be remembered is that while the anger is legitimate, the violence is not. The violence, on both sides, is being carried out by professional killers, terrorists, and trouble makers seeking to exploit the situation. The Sunni destruction of the Mosque(carried out by Baathists or Al Qaida) has led to Shiite retaliation(but that has been carried out by that cheap thug Muqtada Al Sadr and his hit squad). That's something we need to keep in mind. Al Sadr wants violence as much as Zarqawi.Al Sadr knows he can't win at the ballot box, so he's pinning his hopes on an Iraqi civil war and a shiite victory. I hope he's not betting too much.

The Sunnis are ending their boycott and are willing to enter into a national unity government. While this will not automatically end the violence it is an important step. The country is now democratically electing its governments and it needs to have one that can get the job done. It also teaches the Sunni Arabs an important lesson. They make up about 20% of the population, that doesn't entitle them to 100% of the political power. The sooner they learn that the better.

Iraq is still on the brink, and could still fall into civil war. But I'm not betting on it. Everytime it looks like it was going to explode it has failed to happen. Uprisings in Najaf, terroists taking control of Fallujah, worse things have happened in Iraq. It would do the world well not to underestimate democracy and its ability to fight and survive. The terrorists don't have that same ability.
