Peace For Iraq

By Michelle Malsbury
Feb. 27, 2006

As far back as June of 2005 there was talk about civil war in Iraq. The Bush Administration did little to curtail this situation. In fact, they did all they could to incite it. Let's see how.

Congress had been anxious about the Bush Administrations lack of an exit policy for our troops in Iraq. Bush pushed for a constitution for Iraq instead of planning an exit strategy. Bush thought this constitution would allay fears that the growing civil unrest might lead to an all out civil war. He was so wrong! Follow me here.

In 2003 the CIA recruited many former Saddamist military and secret police to help track down the insurgents. Not entirely a bad idea, just not a very balanced one. The problem here was that those people were mostly Sunni's from the old regime. Where did the Shi'ite's and Kurd's fit into this picture? Quite simply they didn't.

Next, the Bush Administration used an old CIA asset, Iyad Allawi, to help negotiate their (Iraq's) new government. Allawi was also a Sunni and this further inflamed the Shi'ite's and Kurd's in this hostile area who felt they were being left behind in this new governmental process. The US pressured the Shi'ite's to quell their quest for equality in this governmental process both privately and publicly, increasing their fervor and moving them closer to civil unrest. Planned or accidental? I say on purpose. How?

The US government and the CIA did not hand over control of Iraq's secret police to their new government, but instead kept control. The Bush Administration pushed for an ex-Saddam led control over their (Iraq's) international security, keeping the Shi'ite's and Kurd's out of the inner circle again.

Aiham Alsammare, former minister of electricity, spoke out and said that the Shi'ite's and Sunni's are interested in negotiating with America and the interim Iraqi officials for ending the armed conflict in Iraq. This is a good thing. What are the parameters? They want the American troops to withdraw and promise things will calm down. So why don't we leave and let them get on with their own governmental process?

Bush said that he would not negotiate for the withdrawal of US troops and pushed for indefinite occupation. Furthermore, Bush said "….Iraq faced a moment of choosing…" (between this sectarian violence and the democracy he has laid before them). Rather simplistic? This came days after the bombing of their holy shrine. To that he added, "the coming days will be intense, but I am optimistic because elections show the Iraqi's want to build a democracy where the Saddam regime once stood". What is he thinking? Or better yet, is he thinking at all?

If the Bush Administration truly wants peace for Iraq they need to do the following; there exists a need to push for a tri-state approach where they Sunni's, Shi'ite's, and Kurd's can govern their own people. This means they need to divvy up Iraq into equal thirds. Let each third elect the people they want to run their section instead of forcing one government, selected largely by the US, to govern them all. This would be democracy and freedom at its best! We need to immediately withdraw our troops and let each section recruit, hire, and train their police and border patrol. Each section can write their own constitution and determine when and how to run their electoral process. We need to let them determine how and who they want to rebuild their newly designated sections and lives. No more no-bid contracts dolled out the Bush cronies! If they (any of the three new governments) want our advice and input let them ask! This is the only solution for a fractured country bent on many varied religious beliefs, values, and mores. Please help them to get back on track by allowing them the freedom to choose!!! Write or call your representative or congress person to ask them to back a complete and immediate withdrawal of our troops from Iraq and the end to this ridiculous war with a nation that had nothing to do with 9/11!!!!
