Feb. 27, 2006 It is sometimes difficult to know just what people want from you. Sometimes it is validation for something they understand to be true but may not be. Sometimes it is justification for toying with the occult, or some other sinful activity that is scripturally in error. Unbelievers want things from believers too. Mostly they just ask that we shut up, but many times they try to tell us how stupid we are for believing the things written in God’s word. It is silly trying to denigrate a true believer because God is certainly much smarter than any man. It is a much wiser path to follow the words of the Lord than the teachings of atheism or works based philosophy or humanism. There are too many people who equate true faith with “religion”. Religious thought that is primarily developed by natural men is fraught with all kinds of spiritual pitfalls. Much of what is written is not scriptural at all. Much of what is written is from a man’s mind attempting to understand the mind of God over the express will of God as found in the written pages of the Prophets and Apostles. I understand translation; taking the words of one language and attempting to place those words in understandable script. This is what Martin Luther was almost martyred for and what other men were killed over. The Romanist church did not want the Bible in the hands of commoners because it stripped the veneer from the many money making schemes created by the greed of the clergy. Eventually God was able to get the right souls in the right places to get the language of scripture out of the heady Latin and into the German, and English and the Spanish and the French languages. The Common people began again to find the true faith apart from the deeds of the law. The law had become a man-made monstrosity of humanistic ideals that probably could have been the envy of the Pharisees, but certainly not Jesus. There is an old aside in church humor that says the only true protestant in the Romanist church is the Pope because he’s the only one who confesses his sins directly to God. But this is the point. Any religion that is bogged down ignoring God while emphasizing works or deeds or prayers or icons is not worthy of the true God of heaven who demands none of those things. When Cain approached God with the works of his hands and requested acceptance, God rejected him and rightfully so because he stood before God in disobedience. There is an old hymn that calls, “Trust and Obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus.” A true Christian trusts the promises of God. He trusts that God commends him to life eternal. Then the true Christian obeys the word of God and brings the message of the Gospel of Jesus forward to the lost of the world. Really, this is all that should be expected from a true Christian. The true Christian does not validate someone’s sin and rebukes the brother who is in scriptural error. That individual could be a best friend. If that is true then it should matter even more that he be brought out from under a degrading sin and back into the light of the Lord. God still places his word in the hands of the common people. He then expects great things from the commoner. The scriptures say that God uses the weak and beggarly things of the world to confound the wise. The wisdom of the world is foolishness to God. There is no single man who can speak for God. God surely speaks for himself and the simple words of his book are proof enough of that. So be careful brother. Understand that the rules and laws of men should conform to those found in God’s own law. We are under the civil laws of magistrates and these we abide by because that is right. Yet, spiritual health and eternal life are not garnered by following civil law.
