![]() By Argile Stox Feb. 27, 2006 Your Honorable Governor Michael Rounds, My name is Argile Stox and I hail from the Great State of New York. I moved to Rapid City about one year and two months ago, by the invitation of a friend – whose family settled in Belle Fourche, South Dakota about one hundred and fifty years ago. Tracy and I have had many discussions concerning your support for banning all abortions (except those pregnancies that will endanger a woman’s life), and we are deeply disappointed that you are standing behind a bill to end all abortions in South Dakota. Governor Rounds, Tracy and I plead with you to please consider the ramifications of banning all abortions in South Dakota. When Roe vs. Wade was upheld by the Supreme Court – the court decision ended all of the back alley unsanitary abortions, and women’s deaths resulting from procedures that were done by unlicensed and untrained individuals, looking for a quick dollar at the expense of women’s lives. The Roe vs. Wade decision gave women the right to exercise their own judgment and legally terminate a pregnancy. Are you, Governor Michael Rounds going to take away a woman’s right to terminate a pregnancy? Will you be able to look women in the eyes, without feeling some sort of shame for your actions against women? Governor Rounds, hypothetically, if this law is passed – who are going to adopt all of the children that will be born to mothers who can not care for their baby, and or babies that are born addicted to Crack & Meth, and those babies who are infected with AIDS? Will you adopt one or two of these children and raise them in your household – absorb all the medical expenses that will be incurred throughout that child‘s life? Let us take this one step further; if a child is diagnosed in the womb as having Down Syndrome and or is deformed. This child will require throughout its lifetime, hundred‘s of thousand’s of dollars to perform corrective surgery, and around the clock nursing care. Governor Rounds, will you personally reach into your wallet and pay for these expenses that will eventually be borne by the State? – Thusly, raising taxes on the citizens of the Great State of South Dakota for the rise in health care expenses. Okay. Let’s look at another side of the coin. A fictional woman, about twenty-five years of age, not married – takes a pregnancy test and it is positive. The woman is a low wage earner (just for the sake of argument – she is working at Wal-Mart) as a cashier, and works thirty-eight hours a week. She lives in a studio apartment, and has all the amenities that she can afford on her salary, and can still put money in the bank to take some college courses in the future – to get a higher wage job. The father of the child does not want anything to do with the baby she is carrying, and has moved out of State. If the woman is forced to bear that child, this woman will have to seek State and Federal monetary assistance to raise that child. This fictional woman may lose her job at Wal-Mart, due to the fact that she is taking too much time off from her duties as a cashier – to care for her child, and she can not afford a full-time baby sitter. Let us take this scenario one step further; this fictional woman has been date-raped, just raped, raped by her father / brother / uncle / or some other sexually depraved individual. Should this woman not have the Constitutional Right to terminate the pregnancy? Governor Michael Rounds, I understand the “Republican Pro-Life Movement” and believe that they are passionate about their cause. However, when the numbers reveal themselves through the bottom line of the State & Federal Operational Budget Deficits - the upswing of expenses caused by accidental pregnancies, pregnancies from rapes, etc, will surely place a huge dent in the taxes that your grandchildren and their children will have to bear in the future. Governor Michael Rounds, please – for the sake of all the women in the United States of America, reverse yourself and veto the Anti-Abortion Bill that will be landing on your desk in the next few days. Allow the Roe vs. Wade decision to survive this underhanded maneuver by the Republican Right To Life Movement. You can still be a Republican Governor – and a good one. Just don’t be pressured to sign a bill that will hurt all women, and send the United States of America back to the Mid-Evil Dark Ages of the 1900’s.
