Blacks Should Join The Mainstream

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
Feb. 23, 2006

I wrote a piece on another web site that made the point that there were some black Republican politicians with possibilities of winning in the upcoming elections of 2006. among those were Lynn Swann, Michael Steele, Keith Butler, and Condoleezza Rice. .

This provoked vehement disagreement from a fellow who said he was a black man, and he predicted that essentially no black voters would vote for a Republican. I noted that one of these politicians had carried about 40% of the black vote though running as Republican. My opponent said that black people voted for politicians who favored issues that benefitted blacks and that Republicans ignored black voters. My reply to that was that black voters might be delusional about what was good for them, that black AND WHITE voters were economically ignorant, and that voting en bloc for Democrats guaranteed that Republicans would ignore them, on the same principle that butchers would not spend much on advertising in a neighborhood that was 100% vegetarian.

To which I got the reply (I paraphrase closely) "are you saying that I should tell the children in my family to drop out of college?" I'm not making that up. I still do not see the logic or the relevance, and I've gotten no clarifying response to my puzzled reply.

But the point of all that is that it has gotten me thinking again. Yes indeed, I do think every once in a while.

First, I note that eighteen of the major corporations in America are now run by black CEOs. "Fortune Magazine" just honored 75 black executives, and as noted, eighteen of these are CEOs of major corporations. If you think it is impossible for a black to get ahead in America, read those sentences over a few times. That would indicate, since corporations are mostly meritocracies and dependent upon performance and making a profit, that there is no reason to think blacks can't be effective leaders.

This all leads up to the CONTROVERSIAL QUESTION. Name a country run by blacks which is successful, peaceful, and prosperous. Heck, name a CITY run successfully by blacks. Certainly not Washington, DC, under Marion Barry, or New Orleans under Ray Nagin, or Detroit, or...Gee, I can't think of one.

Now the point of this is NOT to say blacks are inferior in any way mentally. I have already pointed out that in the business world, working under the rules of capitalism and the necessity of making a profit and being efficient, blacks are doing very well as leaders. So why is the political world different? I return to my original premise which provoked such rancor with the black gentleman: Blacks may be politically delusional and irrational. They vote en bloc for Democrats. Democrats can thus take them for granted and do absolutely nothing other than make empty promises. And by ignoring Republicans, blacks guarantee that Republicans will generally ignore them. Butchers don't advertise in vegetarian neighborhoods. Blacks complain that Republicans ignore them, but the truth is the exact opposite: Blacks ignore Republicans!

Black politicians are not successful because they have pandered to erroneous political and economic beliefs in their constituency, and the constituency remains economically and politically ignorant because black Democratic politicians have found it profitable to reinforce the erroneous beliefs of their constituency. Black political and economic fortunes won't improve until blacks begin splitting their vote and voting for more Republicans just as most other ethnic groups do.

In other words, blacks should join the mainstream. As long as they vote nearly 100% for Democrats, they will be politically powerless. The fact used by my opponent in the debate to show that blacks voted for their self-interest actually proved that they are clueless and ignorant of what is in their best interest. Their voting pattern, nearly monolithic for Democrats, is an sure sign of deranged political thinking.
