Thoughts On NASCAR's New Season

By Kaycee Nilson
Feb. 21, 2006

Just like the Rolling Stones, Mark Martin, driver of the #6 car in the Nextel Cup Series of NASCAR, is having his second "Farewell Tour."

Last season was supposed to be the end of his illustrious career. But between Homestead and Daytona, Martin decided to drive the entire season in the Cup. All last year, they interviewed him and Rusty Wallace about how it feels to drive at this track for the last time. Martin and Wallace also received gifts at certain tracks.

Maybe he feels like he owes it to himself and his fans to make another run for the championship.

But when Tony Stewart in lap 108, drove into Matt Kenseth, I knew this week, everyone would slam me. Especially since Dan's family is from Wisconsin and live close to Matt and I am a Tony Stewart fan! I'm not going to hear the end of this until next Sunday. Probably even the rest of the season.

But Kenseth has the right to be upset with Stewart, but that didn't give him the right to bump Tony while Tony was exiting pit-row. so both drivers have been told to settle down in the Daytona 500. And I don't buy Kenseth's excuse of "I was just waving my hand at him!" Take your penalty just like Tony did. And stop being a baby about it.

But my prediction for this year's "Rookie Of The Year" (and I have been right for the past 7 years) is Denny Hamlin, team-mate of Tony Stewart. To win a pole while you are substituting for another driver, and then go on to win the "Bud Shoot-Out" before your year begins, that's ROY material baby!

Once again, this column and $2.00 will get you a cup of coffee in your favorite coffee house!
