![]() By Allen Robinski Feb. 20, 2006 Was watching a talk show and discussion today on TV about the "street sign vendors". The subject hinged on the question "would you stop and give money to these people". The majority said no because of various resons. Most said they would not feel safe rolling down their window and allowing a person to walk up to the car. Others said they were not sure what to do. Some said they had offered yard work to one and he refused. Another said they would go to McDonalds and bring food. The person declined. I remember a few cases in my travels on projects. One was at an exit off the freeway with a traffic light at the street which then went under the overpass. This man had a sign which read "HUNGRY PLEASE HELP, GOD BLESS". In all the signs I have seen on this subject, they always add "GOD BLESS". I suppose they think God will then shame us into giving them money for booze. I passed this same way each day and once offered to take him to a shelter where he could get food and a safe haven. He refused. I saw a booze bottle under the overpass near where he always stood. One day we stopped at the light and saw a different man. We asked where the other man was and he said he was sick. We found out later from locals that this is a family that does this for a living. The same thing happened here where I live. There was a family who staged Signs on different street intersections. Finally it was discovered they lived in an expensive home and had more money then most average working class. They were charged with fraud and the IRS was investigating them the last I heard. This was caused by false claims to secure money. In todays society, I refrain from dealing with these individuals. I feel if they can stand on hot street corners they can work. Most are in better health and more capable of working than me. Also I do not wish to bring one of these types to my home to work if they are willing. I have heard too many horror stories due to this action. ------------ About the author Allen Robinski: I am a Retired Government worker who now has time to express my concerns. Thanks to UK.
