Feb. 20, 2006 This is not a rebuttal Mr. McCrae, just another view from the heart. Ray Nagin or all the Ray Nagin’s going back to Jean Lafitte and Dominic Yeo didn’t make New Orleans what it was, is and will be again. New Orleans was is and always will be a city of people ranging in color from coal black to lily white and every shade in-between. To look at New Orleans as just another American city tells me those who do have never been there to enjoy the diversity the city is known for. By day the tourists with children in hand roan the narrow streets of the Vieux Carrie, by night the party crowd and young lovers come out to play. More history is concentrated in the small section known as the French Quarter than in much of the rest of America combined. Every red blooded American boy and girl should be allowed to spend a week in the French Quarter to be indoctrinated into man and woman hood. New Orleans truly is a city one can [unashamedly] fall in love with. There’s more to New Orleans than the French Quarter. If we go beyond St. Charles Street, Tulane University and Audubon Park there’s a New Orleans Nature put a big hurt on, and political corruption an even greater hurt. The government bureaucracy’s are smart like a herd of turkeys the day before thanksgiving. We know there are hundreds of mobile homes in Arkansas sitting in the mud. What we’re not told is no city planning committee want to turn their cities in to trailer parks. We also know federal environmental rules prohibit trailer parks being created in food zones there are other restriction that prohibit the trailers. Is that a catch 22 or what? Corrupt politics is one more way of pronouncing Louisiana. Corruption is more a religion than an offence. I wouldn’t be surprised if it weren’t taught as a required class at LSU. There was no doubt in our minds the funding for the rebuilding of Louisiana wouldn’t be misused and funneled off. Many internet pundits predicted the day the funding was proposed. This was one more example of the bureaucrats thinking enough money will make thing go away. It hasn’t worked, it doesn’t work and it will never work. It’s the politician’s way to get out-front ahead of the criticism that’s sure to follow. God doesn’t create hurricanes man creates hurricanes. It’s those damn SUVs that cause all that global warming. If you don’t believe me ask Al Gore, he’ll tell you. Our friend Michael John McCrae inspired my rant regarding New Orleans Mac gave many facts in an articulate presentation that was well researched and well documented . This article comes from the gut for a city I truly love. I’ve been in love with New Orleans since I was a 15 year old boy. New Orleans has changed in those 60 years. The French Quarter remains basically the same. There are minor changes, when drinking on the streets it should be in a plastic container. There are fewer bars and more t-shirt shops. Not so many street mistrials. More children during the day the smells and the atmosphere are pretty much the same. It still rings in my heart as my favorite city. Ray Nagin can make all the predictions he likes, he doesn’t represent New Orleans. The Cajon’s of Louisiana represent New Orleans. ------------ About the author: Ken Hughes joined the Republican Party at the age of three.
