Feb. 20, 2006 I have to admit that I am very upset with the US Men's Hockey Team. They are supposed to be a team of professionals, but they only worked together for one hour before their first competition. Dream Team my eye. It's like Herb Brooks (head coach of the 1980 Gold Medalist Men's Hockey) said, "All Star Teams loose because the rely solely on the individual talents and not the team as a whole." After watching the Men's Hockey, I am seeing what the man meant. And I'm sorry Olympic Committee, but weren't the athletes disqualified if they are professionals? If this is true, then there goes the hockey teams and the American basketball team. Dream teams aren't made of professionals, they are made by college kids wanting it so much that drool is sliding out of their mouths. That's what was so special about the 1980 hockey team, They worked together for 6 to 8 months before Lake Placid and they won. Despite being picked on by the other hockey teams of the world, they showed heart. And I hate to say this, but the Olympics this year is missing heart in every competition. USA's hockey team is so embarrassing that I am rooting for Sweden. Heck, even Russia has my vote this year. With the hockey boycott of last winter, our professional players lost their edge and it is so evident in this Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. Most of the other teams are national teams that play together for years and they may pull in one or two professionals. I think that the USOC need to call in Assistant Coach Craig Patrick or any of the players from the 1980 team and re-adopt Herb Brooks' style. His team concept was one that has not been duplicated since. It's almost as sad as no bobsled team this year from Jamaica. ------------ About the author: Kaycee Nilson has completed her first novel, "Night Falls on Chicago."
