Feb. 18, 2006 People like waterfalls shot with a dreamy, creamy, milky look to the water. People always ask how this is done. Sometimes they listen to the answer. Once, while hiking along a stream in the mountains of northern Georgia, I had set up my camera at a small waterfall and was shooting some photos when a lady came along with an expensive camera around her neck, and she was hiking with a man who I assumed was her husband. "There is someone with a pretty fancy camera, Charlie," she said loudly. Walking over to me, she stopped and asked, "Do you know anything about photography?" "Well, with all modesty, I do as a matter of fact. I belong to a camera club and have written some articles for photography magazines." "Well then, perhaps you can answer this question for me. I've been wanting to get some photos such as you see in fancy calendars and photography books where the water looks all milky and blurred. How do I get it to come out that way?" I left my camera on its tripod and sat down on a rock and said, "What you need to do is set your camera for a long exposure of around a half-second and you need to find a way to hold the camera really still. During the half-second exposure, the water will be moving and it will turn out nice and milky for you." She looked at me with a somewhat disdainful expression and said, "I'm sure that's not the way to do it. It has something to do with the aperture setting. Come on, Charlie, let's see if we can find somebody who knows what they are talking about." She gave a toss of her head and strode off down the trail. I suspect she never did get the water to turn out as she wanted it. As Yogi Berra once said, "There are some people who, if they don't already know it, you can't tell them anything." Indeed that's true. The example photos show this slow shutter speed technique. In addition, a blue-yellow polarizing filter was used on one of the shots. Trust me. That's the way to do it. ![]() ![]()
