Is Bush Popular, Count The Votes

By Ken Hughes
Feb. 18, 2006

The Democratic Congress is making a big deal out of the president’s poll numbers, I say screw the polls count the votes. Seldom are the poll numbers for congress published, anything below 25% doesn’t seen to interest pollsters or the media. Congress consistently ranks below the 25% figure and we’re expected to listen to them bad-mouth our president and believe them? Polls or no polls President Bush will be around until 2008.

Listening to Democrats trash the president reminds us of when mothers gave children Caster_Oil for diarrhea. It left a bad taste in the mouth and didn’t do much for the diarrhea.

Democrats are unable or unwilling to tell the country how they would do better if they were in charge. They neglect to tell the country how much of what they perceive to be a problem was created when they were in charge. It’s called accepting responsibility something Democrats can’t seem to do. Congress and their staff number in the thousands. The bureaucracy numbers in the millions. Yet congress and the media always blame the president for all the errors they perceive to be happening. Congress would have us believe they have no responsibility what-so-ever aside from riding herd on the president. If this is the case then let’s empower the president with dictatorial powers, by-pass congress and if the president screws up have a revolution and execute him. It would save money and improve segments of Washington.

In lay terms let’s look at the FISA law. The government can wire tap a conversation then within 72 hours it must file a 500 page FISA report requesting permission for the wire tap. Then wait weeks and perhaps months for permission to review the wire tapped conversation. How much more ridiculous does it get than that? How many terrorist attacks could occur in the week and months it took for approval to review the tapes? FISA was merely a feel-good law congress passed for political gain no one ever expected it to be used.

Much of what congress does is political posturing and it has little to do with the actual functions of government or the security of the counter. Congress uses the same tactics as those slight of hand huckster once used on the streets of New York, it was called the shell games. If congress were limited to 12 years maximum service it would go along way to making our representatives honest men and women. They’d have a limited period of time to establish a legacy that would follow them for the rest of their lives. That isn’t the case now Congress can be as irresponsibly as they like knowing they’ll be there long enough their incompetence won’t matter.

As critical as Democrats are of Bush and his administration what do they offer in return? A treasonous Al Gore, a clueless John Kerry, Hillary Clinton whose popularity is failing? Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi along with Howard Dean misjudged the voter’s wants by assuming they knew the voters needs. It’s a continual problem for Democrats assuming they know what’s best for the public with out consulting the public those who count. Democrats were in power for so long, [nearly 70 years] they became accustomed to having it their way. When the voters said otherwise Democrats didn’t listen. First they blamed it on voter fraud, then when that failed just pure bad luck. Not once did they step back to take a look at what they may be doing wrong and adjusting accordingly.

The arrogance of power runs ramped in our nation’s capital. It’s time for voters to make their voices heard and demand term limits for congress. It needs to be in the form of a constitutional amendment. There needs to be a requirement of responsibility forced on congress. Congress not presidents make laws, allocate funds, approve mandates and treaties. Congress has far greater powers than presidents. Yet the persistently shift blame to presidents when things go astray. Or it can be explained as hiding behind your mammas skirts.

Although Democrats are the most prolific in misusing their powers Republican Congressmen and women are equally guilty of the misuse of power granted them. This is why the founding fathers set limits on the terms of congress. Unfortunately the framers of the constitution failed to set ultimate limits on congressional service. An oversight I’m sure they would regret were they around today.
