Strip-Searches: Necessary Or Cruel?

By Kaycee Nilson
Feb. 18, 2006

Recently a Wisconsin native filled a lawsuit against the Cook County, Illinois Sheriff's Department for strip-searching her including a vaginal probe without her consent. The charge she was booked on? A moving violation.

Cook County Sheriff's statement about this was "it's our policy to strip search female inmates." I watched the news report and researched something that I found even more disturbing and wondering what the world is coming to. The male inmates of Cook County are NOT strip-searched. They stopped that practice because it "violated their human rights." WHA????

Then on Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, Los Angeles County jail strip-searched over 100 inmates to stop a riot. 100 inmates with only a blanket to cover their nudity. The racial tension in that jail was so intense that the guards heard about the possibility of the riot and the warden totally agreed with the 24 hour blanket Haute Couture line of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy.

So I have set upon your plate several issues here. Is it right to strip-search the women of Cook County when the men are not? Is it right to keep 100 inmates in blankets for 24 hours? Would the amendment of "Cruel And Unusual Punishment" affect these situations?

Is it not cruel to strip-search a female inmate without her consent to the point of vaginal probing? Why not strip search the men? I can ALMOST understand having the 100 inmates in blankets to stop a riot from happening and breaking out, because how would they have gotten a weapons? But to strip search an american citizen against HER will is unfathomable.

So are a man's rights more important than than woman's right in Cook County? And now our sheriff is up for re-election. I need to know that this is going to be corrected, that either ALL inmates are strip- searched upon the process of being entered into the jail system. But I know he will probably win re-election and the cruel punishments against women mentally will continue. That is why my vote is going to go to anyone that is running against the current Cook County Sheriff.
