Until Now, I've Not Chastised Thomas Keyes

By Tom Pain
Feb. 18, 2006

In fact, he knows, and I know, that I have extolled his virtues many times in public and private communications. I've done that even though he and I have differing opinions on many issues. I’ve admired that he lays out his arguments logically, factually, and unemotionally – unlike most Liberals who randomly select the only facts that support their emotional opinions. In his most recent post, "The War Dead: First 55,000…," Mr. Keyes has now resorted to that same detachment from reality…and I’m saddened.

Being the "collocutor" to whom he refers, I feel the need to express my opinion. First, to label me as the one who "faulted" you for not distinguishing between Iraqis "killed by Americans and those dying by others’ hands" makes me sound like an instigator of discord. So the audience has an accurate perspective of my remarks, they should know that the discussion began with an allegation that Americans had "murdered" over 30,000 Iraqis. You next added that 250,000 is the more accurate number. At that point, I entered the discussion with a request to distinguish between those killed by American troops and those killed by insurgents. Hardly an instigation on my part, in fact I was instigated.

So everyone knows, you never provided that number, nor any convincing evidence of the 250,000 total you stated, regardless of who caused the deaths.

Now, in today’s article, you continue that reckless bandying of vague numbers without documentation. The truth is that no one knows how many have died since the war began. I’m not being a conservative or Republican when I say that, it is just the truth. Unless you can provide convincing evidence otherwise, admit that.

Since I know you can’t document the real number, why don’t you take the opportunity provided by your admission to add another – that all those numbers you suggest refer to the total deaths inflicted by every faction in this war AND that the majority were not directly inflicted by Americans. It’s just the truth, Thomas. Surely, the man I’ve admired will not stoop so low as to distort the truth here in front of everyone.

Yet, I suspect that you won’t. Because somewhere over the last year, Thomas Keyes has become infected with the disease of hatred that is eating at the brain cells of so many Liberals – to the extent that they can no longer think or discourse in logical, truthful fashion about the current administration.

I know this because you spew the other rote lines of hatred rhetoric favored by the diseased Left. You say the President "lied" about WMDs. You know, and I know, and everyone reading this except the diseased Liberals know, that the word "lie" has a very specific definition – here it is:

1. A false statement deliberately presented as being true; a falsehood.
2. Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression.

Note, Thomas, that both definitions require an unequivocal element of "intent." The first uses the term "deliberately" and the second uses "meant" to impart that meaning. Obviously, we both know that no convincing evidence has ever been presented to establish the President’s intent. It is merely your, and Liberals’, opinions that his mistakes have been "lies." Those accusations would be laughed out of any court of law, yet you spew them here like they are established fact.

You next allege that the President "lied" about the Iraqis trying to buy uranium from Nigeria. Where is your proof of that allegation, Thomas? Why do you mock us for denying your charges when you do not offer irrefutable evidence that your charges are true? If I stated that your Mother gang-banged football teams, without offering any evidence, could I then fairly accuse you of lying when you denied it? Why are you correct in making undocumented allegations, yet Conservatives are wrong for denying them?

Finally, I can admit one of your charges. Yes, Thomas, the Republicans "launched a vendetta against Joseph Wilson." Now, let’s see if you can be equally honest – can you admit that their actions came AFTER Joseph Wilson launched a vendetta against Republicans, that it was, in fact, a counterattack perpetrated in self-defense? And here is the important distinction: the Republicans retaliated against Mr. Wilson by telling the truth, albeit by revealing his wife’s CIA employment; Joseph Wilson launched his vendetta by publishing untrue allegations about the Republicans. It is just a sad fact that it is legal for him or any person to slander the administration but illegal for the administration to reveal an undercover operative’s name.

I think whoever revealed Valerie Plume’s name should be prosecuted. At the same time, we need to prosecute whoever leaked the information about the clandestine European prisons – that was classified information as well. And the NSA wiretaps - arrest the person who linked that information. Surely, Thomas, you wouldn’t aver that only one of these leakers be prosecuted.

You claim that it is a lie that there was a link between Sadaam and Al Queida. I again suggest that you’ve taken liberties with the word "lie" since it is well established that the two did have conversations. Disagreeing over the extent of that "link" does not make those with whom you disagree "liars."

Finally, you claim that the administration will not "take any responsibility for the Abu Ghraib abuses." Didn’t they prosecute the parties that committed the abuses? Wouldn’t that qualify as "any?" What more do you want? If you mean to imply that the administration ordered those abuses, I again demand that you provide the evidence that has heretofore eluded the news organizations and military investigations. You can’t, because it doesn’t exist. But that doesn’t stop you from positing conjecture and rumor as fact.

It appears Thomas, that you have lost it. Maybe some Amazonian fungi has infiltrated your brain, maybe your frustration at being on the losing side of popular opinion on so many issues has festered into brain rot, I don’t know. I just know that the Thomas Keyes I’ve admired would not take a public stance on the pile of doodoo you’ve scraped together here. I hope you return to those amazing senses of yours and continue to oppose with facts and supportable deductions, instead of appearing in front of us as yet one more foaming-mouthed, wild-eyed, flaring nostril Liberal, hell bent on destruction at any cost – including the cost of your personal integrity.
