Is Kelly Clarkson Trying To Distance Herself From American Idol?

By Judy Ramsook
Feb. 15, 2006

Usually I try to be as fair as possible with situations or things that arise in life. If, for example, two of my friends are engaged in a heated discussion about whatever and one of them insists that I take his or her side over the other individual’s I try to hear the other person’s side, because as we all know, there are two sides to everything. However, if that is not possible, I try to work with the information I do have.

Similarly, if something, some one, an event and or a certain website is responsible for bringing a considerable amount of recognition to me, not only will I not forget it, but I will give credit where credit is due. For as we also know, no one gets where he is going alone. Recently I heard of a certain celebrity, Kelly Clarkson, who did not express a direct reference to the American Idol show, in her acceptance speeches at the Grammys. A show from which she emerged victorious. She expressed thanks to her fans, which she, Ms. Clarkson claims to mean the American Idol show, so in a way she did mention it, but why not a direct reference?

I mean, before Kelly Clarkson appeared on and won first place in the American Idol contest, did millions of people the world over know who she is?

I am not a regular viewer of American Idol, but I did watch most of the first season’s episodes. Judging from what I saw, the competition seemed to be pretty fierce. Sometimes the singers were asked to sing songs from different styles and genres of music, something that seemed to be quite a challenge for some of the contestants.

In fact, the contest itself was so stressful, that one of the participants ended up being hospitalized, after which she did not return of her own free will. From what I can surmise after all that, if a contestant has the strength, stamina, discipline and determination to carry on and win such a contest, then surely there is nothing to be ashamed of.

I can’t seem to turn the radio on to the pop station without hearing at least one of Kelly Clarkson’s hits being played. The young woman has accomplished a great deal it seems since winning first place in the American Idol contest.

The same show she seems to want to distance herself from. Maybe it’s just me, I don’t know, but I would have to come down with a severe case of amnesia to not want to make a direct reference to where I came from or what was responsible for getting me my start.

For no one just drops from the sky and receives instant success or fame. Of course there are exceptions, such as if you happen to be the child or relative of persons who are already famous, but if some one emerges victorious from a show such as American idol, one would think that person would want to have even more of a reason to endorse the show.

Maybe in all the excitement of winning two grammys, she forgot, who knows. Some one once told me what a person says is important, but sometimes it’s what he or she does not say is what also matters.
