![]() By Judy Ramsook Feb. 15, 2006 Almost eleven years ago when Tejano singing sensation, Selena was killed by Yolanda Saldivar who stated the shooting was an accident, I wondered what makes a shooting incident an accident? Is it some mysterious gravitational pull in the atmosphere that reaches out in some awkward fashion and pulls the trigger on a gun, while the person holding the weapon is doing nothing with regard to the incident? I may not have the stamina to see large quantities of blood gushing out of a dying or dead animal, so hunting is not my thing, but considering what I have heard and read these past few days concerning hunting expeditions, how can a hunter mistake the body of a grown man wearing a neon, orange outfit for something smaller such as a quail? When a cyclist who is riding his bike on the side of the road with a neon attachment on the back of his or her bicycle, isn’t it there for more or less the same reason hunters and their comrades on hunting trips are warned to wear such things? For their own safety as well as a driver on a dark road and hunters and their fellow hunters too. According to a bit of research I did concerning the various colours of quail, it turns out that yes, some quail do have shades of orange on the exterior of their bodies, so I can understand how a hunter can easily mistake a portion of that fluorescent orange clothing his fellow hunter is wearing to be part of a quail’s body. Taking into consideration, of course that the fellow hunter is concealing himself behind a tree or a bit of shrubery or bush for that matter. I don’t know much about US Vice President, Dick Cheney, but whenever I see video clips of him on the news, he looks as if he is a tranquil man. I have not heard him say much about anything either except during the 2004 election vice presidential debates he had with John Edwards. Some people withdraw themselves from the spotlight when certain things occur. Even if one of those things happened to be a sort of an accident which landed their friend in hospital. During the course of living, I have also noticed how certain incidents can change the way we live or do things for sheer delight. In light of the recent hunting accident involving the vice president and his friend, maybe stricter hunting laws will be set in place so such accidents can be kept to a minimum or non existent. Maybe it will also change the speed at which various forms of the media receive word of such incidents; faster than say a day. It has been noted that we learn something new everyday, from all of this it is suffice to say that no matter who or where you are, things can happen. Things no one can predict or warn you enough about. On a personal note, I hope Mr. Whittington recovers from his injury.
