Ken Gets A Makeover, But Does He Really Want Barbie Back?

By Robert Paul Reyes
Feb. 14, 2006

Barbie knows how to accessorize, she has tons of accessories that bring in millions for Mattel Inc.

Barbie's fave accessory is her boy toy Ken, but Mattel announced in February 2004 that Barbie and Ken had split after 43 years because they wanted to spend some time apart.

But now Ken is back, buffer and more stylish, and Mattel claims he wants to win back the babe he split from a couple of years ago. Ken makes his return sporting a beach-wear ensemble complete with board shorts and a sparkling white T-Shirt.

Mattel is hoping this publicity gimmick will revitalize the company's fortunes. In January, the company blamed sagging Barbie sales for its less than spectacular profits.

"Barbie and Ken" is so 20th century, it's obvious that they will never be more than platonic friends. They may be "friends with benefits", but the only benefit Ken enjoys is trying on Barbie's accessories when she's not looking.

After more than four decades of the "Barbie and Ken" farce, it's time for Mattel to get real.

Mattel should admit the obvious, and find Ken a doll he can have more than a plastic relationship with. "Ken and Ben" would be the perfect couple for the 21st century.
