Feb. 12, 2006 “14Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? 15And what concord hath Christ with Belial? Or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, says the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 18And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:14-18) This passage has been used for centuries to remind Christians they should not be married to unbelievers. The passage has many other valuable uses for the child of the true God. Since God dwells inside the soul the relationship of the believer to those who do not should remain as platonic as that expressed in the manner of Jesus when he was among sinners. Jesus did not participate in their sins, rather he spoke against sin and the need for those around him to repent and turn to God. Light has no “communion” with darkness. It is either light, or it is dark. There is no type of between. If there is any light at all then darkness is defeated. Can righteousness have any true “fellowship” with unrighteousness? No. The one despises the other and there is no between. There is no such thing as being half righteous and being able to gain eternal life by being only half good. The life must contain Christ, who is fully righteous. The scriptures are true when they say “there is none righteous, no not one”. The scriptures are also true in that: “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” (Romans 3:25-26) Does Christ have anything in common with Belial? No. Jesus has nothing in common with any other world god or religion. He is the only and ever living God and he does not sanction any path to heaven that does not lead through him. He is the Shepherd and he expects his sheep to hear his voice and follow him. Does the Temple of God have anything to do with idols? No. The Temple of God on earth is the body of believers who carry the Spirit of God and the truth of the Gospel of Christ. This is why Christianity is the most hated of all faiths. Men call for toleration and respect and admiration and concord with all religions except Christianity. Jesus once taught that he did not come to bring peace but a sword. This would seem strange coming from the Prince of Peace but his words did not mean he held the sword. Jesus held the message of peace that the world does not want or recognize. The world is in darkness and the darkness does not comprehend Jesus. We who know God must understand that we are the outcasts. We should not try to get back into the ways of the world either. We are to come out and be “separate”. Abraham was told to leave his country and separate himself. The Jews were to come out of Egypt and never go back. The Christian is a “New Creation” and all the old things are to be relegated to the past. To be “yoked” to the world is to be trapped unequally with the unbeliever. It is better to be among equals. Jesus did not participate in the world’s pleasures.
