Just A Servant

By Skip Toomaloo

“1So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. 2Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 3I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. 5Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.” (1 Cor. 4:1-5)

This must become the perception of the world toward the believer. We are servants. This was the role of Jesus when he walked the earth. This is the same role we take on when we receive Christ as our Lord. We become his servant.

We are “entrusted with the secrets things of God”. These secret things are meant to be shared. Paul continually wrote “Behold, I show you a mystery…” and these mysteries are what we are commanded to explain to a world lost among the many false testimonies of the gods who belong to the imaginations of men.

For us to be “proven faithful” we spread a gospel of pure love and hope. It is the message of Jesus and no other. Truly, no other message is capable of conducting a physical life into the eternal presence of God.

There will be harsh rhetoric and judgment against those of us who remain faithful to the Gospel. The natural inclination of all men will be rejection of truth and acceptance of only that which make them feel comfortable. The Gospel of Jesus is not meant for comfort. The Gospel of Jesus is meant to make natural men think. It is to make them curious enough to seek the truth. We, knowing Jesus to be the only possible truth must never fear the judgments of men, and we should not question ourselves as we are led by the Spirit. We should continually examine ourselves in the course of our walk to ensure we are not blatant in sin, but as we understand the scriptures and Christian Doctrine we will stand by our template, the Lord Jesus Christ.

We may share a “clear conscience” but never think you are completely innocent. Never fear the judgment of a natural man remembering that our judgment is from God. We who have received Christ have already been judged by his righteousness since no man is naturally righteous nor can any natural man self-produce righteousness. Righteousness is a gift based in faith. It is a gift based in Christ.

When the Lord does finally appear then all the motives of the hearts of men will be revealed. It is imperative for each Christian to hold Jesus forward in life and in service. We are servants, nothing more. We will receive his praise or we will suffer loss of reward and shame before the throne.

Christians are given gifts for the purpose of ministry. God does not send forth servants without the proper tools to complete the assigned tasks. We have God’s written word. We have the Spirit of God within. We have a true relationship with Jesus the Lord. With such tools at our disposal there is no fear and no need to be ashamed. We are well equipped servants who stand only in truth, waiting for the coming of our Lord.
