Just Another Bullying Column

By Kaycee Nilson
Feb. 9, 2006

My 10-year-old son was recently suspended from school for defending himself in a fight. Now I ask you, what kind of school would suspend a child for self-defense?

Now my son sits here with a right eye that is red and swollen. I even had to take him to the doctors over this. Mad? No, I'm beyond furious. In my day, if the other person perpitrates the incident got suspended and the victim that fought back was heroed for their bruises. But now our children have to put up with a "No Tolerance" policy that has taken away more of our children's rights than we thought.

You are no longer to fight for yourself and defend your beliefs. I guess that our children are to drop to the floor as if they were on fire and just let the bully beat the living crap out of them. Since this right has been taken away from our children, no wonder that teens are not responding to the laws of America.

History teaches that those that stood their ground went in a hero's attitude. Where are the next heros? Being trampled by bullies who think that they can get away with anything. At this writing, I do not really know what my sons are supposed to do in school when they are jumped. Are theysupposed to take it or fight back for what they believe? We are a war-like nation, but euthanising our youth of today with the "No Tollerance Policy," what are the future leaders of the world going to be like?

I want to know what the parents are going to do about their son that taunted my child and then kicked him so hard in the face that now my son looks like a prize fighter. I know for a fact that their son called my son a "white girl," which of course made my son rage and he slapped the other child in the face. But that gave the other kid no right to kick my son so hard that his eye nearly swelled shut.

Both boys are to blame for the incident, but what kills me is that there was a substitute in the room and he did nothing to stop the fight. I call for an explanation on the substitute teacher's reasoning behind this and I am told that the school has decided not to call on him anymore to teach in our school. For you see, the school that my ten-year-old attends is a special school for children that are special emotional needs children. They have had problems in regular school and this school is a sort of last resort other than home-schooling. So you see, I know what it is like to have a child that through no fault of their own, has problems with anger, AD/HD, learning disabilities and a myrad of other problems.

It's no bed of roses, and what kills me is that my son can be a very loving child. He checks on me when he first gets home from school and asks me if there is something I want or need. And then as quick as a bolt of lightening, he can go into rage mode and even the cat hides for hours on end until we can get him under control.

During his one day suspension, I had him to totaly bleach out the bathroom. After a protest that included the labor laws on children, he went ahead and cleaned the bathroom anyway. For you see, I do not believe in corporal punishment unless the crime fits. But for a fight in school, that demands labor housework. He fell asleep smelling like Pine Sol and Orange Cleaner and KaBoom! Harsh? I could have whipped that kid until my arm got tired, but what would that teach him? Violence is the answer to every problem? I don't think so. He went through enough physical punishment when I lived with his dad, he surely needs a new way of thinking when he gets in trouble.

Some of you may click your tongue and tell me that I should have spanked the child. But since he was defending himself, a day of hard labor will instill in his brain that fighting is not the answer to everything. Sometimes, punishment is more if you make them totally clean the bathroom while you stand over them and leaves a more permenant impression than a spanking. Spakings are over with and the child moves on, but to have to do a household chore that they are not used to? Now that leaves the message that a spanking you might get over quickly, but the cat-box with nasty litter leaves a lingering smell that equates to a "No Fighting Policy" of the parents.
