The Pigeon

By Kaycee Nilson
Feb. 8, 2006

After my last orthopedic surgeon visit, I got tired of waiting for the bus and walked a mile to the train station that would bring me back home. My Doctor had told me to not walk that far, but I got impatient.

Sitting on the station above the street and waiting for the train, I was eating some crackers that the doctor had given me. All of a sudden, I felt something land on my knee. I looked down and there was a beautiful brown and white pigeon that obviously hurt his right leg because he kept it up and would tentatively put it down. I fed him some of my crackers. He pecked them off my wind-suit pants. I reached ever so gently to grab him and put him in my Dale Earnhardt bag to bring home.

Yes, I could imagine the shock and horror of not only the bird but the shock and horror of my family. Bu something about that bird made me realize that we all suffer through life. (For those wondering, he flew off my knee and across the train station.)

The Bible says that for everything there is a time. Maybe all the problems I am going through with my back right now, where they are afraid to operate because of the spinal cord and other nerves, is my time to suffer and reflect on all that I have and be thankful for them. I don't think I tell them enough.

It's hard to reflect on your inner-self. But in many ways, that pigeon taught me a lesson that day. No matter how bad it hurts to stand, you have to try to continue to persevere to get the basic necessities of life. I guess that ever since two weeks ago, I have tried to not dwell on my back and the great pain in my legs. (I'm no going mention the popping of the knees, hip and back.) Not to mention that daytime television really is boring. I've tried to spend as much time with the boys as I can.

Do you know that I have found out that no is translator for three-year-old. And fifth grade math is math I haven't seen since college!

Well, this column and $2.00 will get you a cup of coffee at your favorite coffee house!
