Feb. 7, 2006 The Siblings and I were born in the aftermath of World War Two. My father was a teenager during that time who worked to help provide for his siblings during the war. When he became a young man, he enlisted in the Navy and afterwards re-enlisted in the Army. He was promoted all the way to Sergeant and taught me and my siblings how to salute and stand at ease for him. We also learned some military marching chants. "Nineteen Sixty Four, My Mother Went to War, She Opened the Door and Peed on the Floor and that was the End of the War. Ump Pah Ump Pah Ump Pah Pah - Hay Foot, Straw Foot, Hay Foot, Straw Foot, HEY!!! Ump Pah Ump Pah Ump Pah Pah." My father was sent to Germany and his family accompanied him. My father opted to live in the German community rather than on the Military Base. We rented the upper part of a house from a German family. There was a coal burning stove and water had to be heated on the stove for washing dishes. There was a corn field across from the house with ox driven carts. The German Children in the household became our play companions. I did not realize at the time that my father was there to maintain peace in that country and a few years back that we were on less than friendly terms with Germany. Ten years back, had some of the Germans known my Mother's Maiden Name, the fate of my siblings, my mother and myself would not have come to a friendly conclusion. I remember the American Soldiers when they came to community. They came in tanks and army trucks. I always thought they were awesome. The German children loved them. The American Soldiers would hand out candy to the German children. My siblings and I would greet the American Soldiers along with our German speaking playmates. The soldiers didn't realize that not realize that my siblings and I were American Army Brats. My sister and I would thank the American Soldiers for the candy and tell them what wonderful heroes they were. They would comment on how amazingly well we spoke English. Ja! danke! We speak much better English than We do German! You handsome American Soldier! After thanking the soldiers, we would ask that they give regards to an MP named Sargent Baldy with the big cigar. Afterwards we would chant. Hay Foot, Straw Foot, Hey Foot, Straw Foot, HEY!!! Ump Pah Ump Pah Ump Pah Pah!!!! In Nineteen Sixty Four, Our Mother Went To War She opened the Door ....................... Hay Foot, Straw Foot, Hay Foot, Straw Foot Hey!!!! My experiences made me ponder on how the people in other lands react to the American Soldiers of today. I don't believe the Iraqi prison scandals are the whole story. My son is in the Military. He agreed to sign up for six years because they spent two years training him for what he needed to know. He is a nuclear engineer and comes out with a bachelors degree. He has been all over the world including the war front. Whatever he does must be pretty important to assure the safety of this country. My niece has also spent several years in the Army. She has been to Bosnia and Iraq. She tells me that the soldiers are there to help the people get fresh water, electricity and schools. Girls are allowed to go to schools now. She was been placed in harms to help these people My neice wasn't in the front of the battle but she wasn't behind the desk either. It is my speculations that the American Soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and other dangerous lands are just as respected in those communities as the American Soldiers in Germany were when I was a child. ------------ About the author: Bonijean Isaacs is a freelance writer and Astrologer in West Virginia.
