Brain Scans And Politics

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
Feb. 7, 2006

Using a fMRI scanner, one which measures brain activity, or “functioning,” rather than just structure, scientists (hopefully not the ones who make ridiculous remarks about climate models) scanned the brains of a small sample of Republicans and Democrats, and they discovered some interesting information.

First, Democrats appear to be more emotion-based than republicans, which anybody could have told the scientists based on the arguments advanced in political debate. The highly emotional, empathic Hollywood elite, for example, are notoriously Democratic, and their arguments in political debate are irrational and emotional.

Democrats appear to fall in love with their candidates—that’s my interpretation of the results, though the scientists don’t quite come out and say it. This explains, perhaps, why Democrats stick with their flawed, corrupt, dishonest, lying candidates as Whitney Houston has stuck with Bobby Brown while she’s been dragged down into drug abuse and degeneration. Democrats are, thus, like abusive wives who keep coming back for more abuse. With Democrats, however, the abuse consists of losing elections, not smacks upside the head.

The study did show, owever, that partisans of both stripes tend to disregard information which does not fit their preconceived opinions. This explains why it is so difficult to hold a rational discussion with some of the folks on U.K!

This irrationality of partisans explains further the difficulty Democrats have in winning elections: It is the extreme partisans, the irrational, those incapable of assimilating facts and using logic, who have become the guiding force of the Democrats. The extremely partisan Republicans, on the other hand, do not control the Republican Party. They are rightly considered fringe elements. The controlling factions of the Republican Party are the calmer, more rational, true mainstream, grassroots people.

This explains, too, why Republicans collect a great amount of their campaign money from small grassroots donors, while Democrats rely on big fat-cat extremist contributors such as George Soros, trial lawyers, and Hollywood elites.

Indeed, it is interesting when someone applies new science to old questions.
