Feb. 5, 2006 Some will say I’ve spent my life of 75 years filled with useless knowledge. Perhaps that’s why I’m so addicted to this web magazine. It offers each contributor true freedom of expression. The editor has very few rules to follow and those he has, he rarely enforces. When I started posting articles it was pre-presidential elections. Most of the articles were of a political nature. If any of you readers think this website is only read among us children who write for it you’re mistaken. Myself and several other contributors were challenged from the outside for things we wrote in those days. Post-presidential elections changed the nature of U K it became less of a news source and more of "what I did on my summer vacation." Shortly after the elections the headhunters moved in, those who challenge articles for their lack of professionalism, poor spelling and grammar, religious beliefs, any number of frailties as the headhunters saw them. I personally took umbrage and left the site for a short period. I posted on other sites, I didn’t need this crap, and then I began to realize what UK was all about, a place where even the vilest and mean-spirited of us has a voice. I had several choices I could return and ignore my critics or I could return and challenge them or I could stay away entirely. The latter would have kept me away from all the fine writers who had become my friends and colleagues. I chose to return and much to my chagrin I found myself engaging is some of the rancor that permeated the site. I will credit the headhunter with one thing, they made a very sloppy but informative writer [myself] hone his skills. I’m still convinced the message is more important than the words that deliver it. Still sloppy is sloppy and there’s no excuse for that. The Editor of Useless Knowledge Online Magazine is in the process of improving our little message board to the world. Improving is a dangerous game to play in something as volatile as providing a free service to those who have choices of who’s free service to accept. Useless Knowledge isn’t a Blog as I understand Blog’s. Useless Knowledge is either a News_Service or a Tabloid. It’s apparent the Editor is attempting to make it both much in the same vane as Rupert Murdock made his News papers and Television stations, some of the most successful providers of News and Titillation in the world. Can lightening strike twice in the same industry………?? Now for some unsolicited advice. The online News search sites will start paying attention to UK when they publish some real news. If I were the publisher I would feature [News] and put the tabloid features second under [Opinions] that way everyone gets satisfied and the headhunters can still pray on the innocent. Or those who’s intellect is beyond their comprehension It’s just a thought. Despite the irritations of those who don’t have a clue of what they speak [in my opinion], I still appreciate many of the articles written by my friends on both sides of the political persuasion. It’s that difference of opinions that makes us stronger. The good published on this site far out weights the bad. Far be it from me to suggest anyone be prohibited from voicing an opinion. As I see it UK is one of the few sites where anyone with any view short of pure vulgarity is welcomed. The editor of Useless Knowledge has requested donations [money] to pay for advertising to reach a broader audience. This is not unique to UK, many websites request donations. You’re not being asked to pay for the privilege of posting articles. You’re being asked to become a member of the club and to support the club with a donation of your choice. If you think this hobby is expensive, try Golf. In closing let me say I’ve enjoyed my two and a half years with UK, I can honestly say I have learned more than I’ve informed. For all of my e-mail friends [to numerous to list] I’ve meet on UK I appreciate your friendship. To the headhunters, enjoy the sport of defamation, don’t expect me to join in anytime soon. To the editor, thanks for the space allotted me each week. And last but not least, I thank God for my 75 years of good health and happiness. ------------ About the author: Ken Hughes joined the Republican Party at the age of three.
