Feb. 4, 2006 Over the years I have heard the many ways some people have described some one’s outer beauty. These persons have used just about all the adjectives one can think of when it comes to matters of one’s appearance. You know the ones, beautiful, pretty, gorgeous, handsome, which are more commonly used ones. In fact when I was growing up, it was not uncommon at all if some one were say, looking at a photo of a beauty while uttering, a line from that famous work, Dr. Faustus: “Was this the face that launch’d a thousand ships…” penned so eloquently by Christopher Marlowe in his reference to Helen Of Troy. To which I would silently say to myself, here we go again, some one is trying to pay somebody a compliment about her looks. That was fine, in fact it was such a refreshing way of thinking of some one’s beauty that it made that one Marlowe line all the more famous. Since then I have heard and read of many other ways one describes some one’s outer appearance, but the one line that now seems so refreshing is one by the pop singer John Mayer. From a song that is about a couple years old, the line is also the title of the catchy tune: Your body is a wonderland. When I heard it, I thought to myself, wow, somebody finally got it right, about the human body that is. It is indeed a work of art when one stops and takes a good look and analysis of the many ways in which it works. For when everything feels as if it’s working well, we feel fine and healthy, but the moment we suffer the tiniest of headaches, something does not feel right. To top things off, almost everything we have is there for a particular reason or another. Of course there are some things some of us may wonder about such as tonsils, and appendix. If our bodies can function well without them, why were they put there in the first place? In addition why do people ask if we would like some ice cream after coming from a trip to the dentist? Are they being sarcastic, funny or do they truly think some iced dessert will ease some of the discomfort one is feeling? Maybe they are just trying to get your mind off all the discomfort you are feeling which is fine. Sometimes we could all use some refreshing distractions. Especially if that distraction can enable some one to not dwell on his or her physical agony. Returning to the John Mayer hit single, the character in the song is telling his mate how beautiful her body is and how irresistible it is to him. The song has sexual overtones, but hey, as opposed to saying something such as, some one is beautiful, saying it the way John Mayer does, your body is a wonderland, at least the character in the song is being honest about what he is saying and or wants. It is also a refreshing way of viewing such an entity. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
