Feb. 3, 2006 Lenny Bruce famously said that there's nothing sadder than an aging hipster, I contend that there's nothing sadder than an aging diva. Madonna's performance at the 1884 MTV Video Music Award where she wore a white wedding dress and rolled around onstage and simulated masturbation with the veil, was groundbreaking, erotic, exuberant and controversial. Watching a young person breaking all the rules is like a shot of adrenaline. Madonna's performance at the 2005 European Video Music Awards where she rolled around on stage in her ridiculous grannyporn purple leotards was tired, embarrassing and controversial. Watching an old lady trying to remain relevant with the young crowd by contorting her body into unnatural positions is like drinking a glass of cold water spiked with saltpeter. A 47-year old Diva should only roll around onstage, if she is suffering an epileptic seizure. I remember when the world was young, and I was cruising around in my car and I heard Madonna's first hit "Holiday" on my AM radio. I instinctively hit the pedal to the metal as my head bopped to Madonna's music and I celebrated the wild abandonment of youth. Madonna is a master of reinventing herself, but when you are a middle-aged mom, it's impossible to pass yourself off as sexy teenybopper. I hope that Madonna will show respect to her fans, herself and her family, by refraining from writhing around onstage.
