Computer Related Tales

By Judy Ramsook
Feb. 3, 2006

Argile Stox’s recent articles about his computer related problems prompted me to take a look back at some of the times I have had with mine and some other pertinent obstacles I thought I would never have solved. Upon going to the local retail outlet to make the purchase I was unaware of many things that now seem humourous in comparison.

For instance, I had no idea computer viruses would have been such the big problem they have become today. Then before I could have left the store with my exciting purchase, I learned something else, most viruses come through emails. Knowing that, I just thought I would be extremely cautious about which emails I opened. I did not know too much about computers back then, five years ago, but what a time it was.

I recall asking some one who was more computer literate than I was at the time which key do I hit in order to get the @ when it came time to send some one an email. I remember being laughed at and now I can laugh at that because although it was a simple thing to discover, I also learned if you did not know something, you simply did not know it. Initially, I got the computer because I wanted to write by way of the MS Word program and maybe send some one an email every now and again.

Then came the internet and the initial enthusiasm one feels when that first instant message has been sent. That was addicting for the first couple of days or so. I would be looking for one thing and find myself inadvertently looking for other pieces of information, or I would be chatting with a friend or relative and before I realised it, a good portion of the day had gone by.

When I became accustomed to it and the internet I only logged on when I wanted to search for something. All was going well after that, until the computer suffered its first crash.

I panicked. For it was then I also realised how important the computer had been while it was running well. Thank goodness my brother, who conveniently happens to have a degree in Computer Science was on hand to bring my new toy back to life.

I swore after that incident that I would defragment the hard drive at least once a month or so and also log off when the machine is not in use, for when it crashed, I did lose some documents and short stories too. Now I back up data on floppy disks and cds or get an email account with an abundance of space and just send precious documents to it for safe keeping.

As for the antivirus program. People who know have recommended ones that can update themselves with the latest antivirus protection. Today, the computer has become such an important part of our daily lives that it makes some people wonder how did we ever get along without it? To which some might answer, they managed.
