Those "Born Of God" - First John Chapter 5

By Skip Toomaloo

“4For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith. 5Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5: 4-5)

It is a simple scriptural truth that whatever is born of God has nothing in common with the world. Jesus once told his disciples not to be surprised that the world would hate them, because the world first hated him. The world hates Jesus because he is God and he is not of the world. Those who are born again by the blood of Jesus are adopted into the family of God; becoming sons. Hey, the world proves every day that it hates God’s sons!

The one wonderful thing about this is that to be born of God is to “overcome” the world. We cannot be taken from the hand of God or un-adopted from his family. This “victory” is secured by our faith.

Since the Christian has already been assured of his victory he need never fear the wrath or the scorn of the world. The world could peacefully go its way and not pester the Christian, but the world is the world. It hates the Christian and will remind him every day of this hatred.

Contentment comes through the knowledge of God. The born again believer has an important ally in his walk and in his work. This ally responds to the believer’s spiritual needs and lends comfort in all trying situations. This ally lives inside the believer. John wrote:

“10He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (1John 5:10-13)

We know of a surety that we have eternal life. We may have sought it, but it is not something that can be sought to be found. God grants eternal life through his son Jesus. If we have the Son we have life. There is no taking this life away. Jesus promised his faithful that he would abide within the believer forever. Forever is nothing less than that.

The proof is in the testimony. Look at the example of Peter on the day of Pentecost. He brought forth a great sermon and 3000 souls were saved that day. Before the day the Spirit gave him his voice he was cowering with the other disciples wondering if he would ever see the light of another day. The indwelling Spirit was the proof. We who believe hold this same Spirit within us. Two thousand plus years have not changed a thing.

The unbeliever tries his best to “make [God] a liar”. The scriptures are myths and lies. The prophets and apostles were all make believe. Jesus did not fulfill the prophesies. The Gospels are made up…etc. These are nothing more than the voices of the world. If the voice is from one without the Son, the chance is there is no “life” in the words. There is no spiritual guidance or influence. There is only the attempt to scuttle faith.

The believer deals in life. More exactly, the believer deals in eternal life. This life is in Jesus through faith. “13These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
