It's Democracy, Just Not Our Democracy

By Ken Hughes
Feb. 1, 2006

Regardless of what George Bush’s critics say he’s encouraged a democratic fervor taking hold around the world. More common folks are voting and demanding the right to vote than anytime in history. There’s a thrust for self-rule like the world has never seen before. It would seem toppling one dictator has encouraged many to push their Dictators, Kings, and Governments in the direction of accepting self_rule as a right of the people. Actually it started with Ronald Reagan, then subsided under the Bill Clinton administration and gained steam again when George Bush became President. Freedom seems to be a Republican thing while Democrats approve of more oppressive styles of rule.

Liberals have a thousand reasons why the world should maintain the statuesque. Freedom demands to high a price in human lives. Liberating nations isn’t America’s responsibility. America shouldn’t interfere without the permission of the U N and the E U. You can bet for every excuse liberals give there’s a profit motive in there somewhere. That’s another thing that needs to be exposed. The majority of those who speak for liberalism are among the wealthiest people in the world. When they become rich enough poverty seems to become their cause, or to quote an anonymous source “It’s wonderful being rich enough to speak of poverty with compassion and understanding.”

Those liberal congress persons who’re continually giving your tax money to their friends for pet pork projects are the ones who are the most critical of any reforms in oppressed countries. People who couldn’t make it in the corporate world presume to know how to make it in the political world, the super rich, Pelosi, Kerry, Kennedy, Byrd, Biden, Schumer, etc. are the ones who insist on ruling every aspect of the lives of the average person. Their idea of democracy is to have the courts make the rules while congress makes noise.

Everyone differs on the definition of democracy. It’s incumbent on America to allow these democracies to grow in their own way in their own time. America should be there to offer advice not consent. 220 years ago an arrogant group of men decided they no longer needed the mother country, [England] telling them what when and how to act. These men perfected democracy in a way the world had never known. They did it without the interference of other nations. With advice not consent.

Democracy begins with baby steps, it’s a learning process that can’t be ignored or bypassed. As these new nations make their move toward a more democratic political process America should be there to lend a helping hand and should stay out of the building process of these nations. They should have the privilege of making the same mistakes America made in the beginning.

State of the Union Message

Tonight President Bush will give his annual State of the Union Speech. He will be expected to say what he intends to do about Iran. How he intends to assist with democracies in Iraq and Afghanistan. The President will be expected to tell his critics how he’ll do all those things they criticize him for doing. If he only had the courage to tell the media pundits and his critics he intends to do nothing more than what those countries request of America and otherwise take a wait and see attitude. If he could tell the American people it’s their democracy let them sort it out I'm sure most would agree.

Such words would undoubtedly be welcomed and accepted by the public and would give his dissenters a wealth of materiel to make his remaining years in office a disaster. Liberals use words as double edged swords. On the one hand they demand the president take decisive actions and on the other hand criticize him when he does. It’s a no_win situation for the president.

We’ve been given indications of what the president will speak about tonight in the State of the Union Address. As one pundit put it the president will not be speaking to those in the auditorium but the American People. God willing the public will change channels and avoid the autopsy the Media and Democrats will perform on his words later in the evening. What some perceive as failures others see as successes. It’s up to the individual to decide for themselves. Let’s all listen to the president without bias and with open minds? Perhaps then his message will get through.

Political Footnote:

The DNC [Democratic National Committee] has 5.5 million dollars in the bank going into the mid_term elections. Hillary Clinton has 21.5 million for her Senate campaign, [interesting.]
