Thoughts on the New Year

By L.J. Chapman
Jan. 1, 2007

Ah, New Year's Eve. A time for adults to gather together and bring in the new year with parties, noisemakers, and a lot of alcohol. A time where all you're really looking for is someone to kiss at midnight. A time where you just don't want to be alone. New Year's Eve is a beautiful concept: You're getting a clean slate, you get to start fresh again.

"2006 was just a bad year for me." Everyone's had a bad year before. On the eve of 2000 becoming 2001, I got incredibly drunk, locked myself in the bathroom, and cried because I was just so happy 2000 was over. 2001 was gonna be a good year.

In 2001, I got married, got pregnant for my son, Mikey, and saw my husband leave me for a teenage girl. Maybe 2002 was gonna be my year.

Every year has been incredibly good and incredibly bad.

In 2006, I was strong, I learned aout Love, I grew up, enrolled in school, and managed to (amazingly) give my son a good Christmas.

In 2006, I learned how evil one drug can be, got into a head-on collison, which has left me with headaches for the rest of my life, moved away from my family, failed at living in the city, and had to come home and admit that I failed.

2006 rocked. 2006 sucked. It hurt. It was funny. It was chaotic. It was calm. It was Webster, MA. It was South China, ME. It was Worcester, MA. It was Southbridge, MA. It was Iraq. I was Korea. It was the United States.

2006 was war. It was hope. It was wonderfully beautiful, and terrifyingly ugly. It was a year of learning, failing, winning, losing. It was everything it could be.

2006 is over. And now everyone gets another chance to make their years better. Bring in 2007.

Happy New Year. And good luck.
