Dec. 31, 2006 Fred is talking turkey or should I say, according to his evolutionary beliefs, possible "sub turkey form"? What a great Christmas present for us all at U-K to read his article: Doing My Part To Attack Christmas
[NOT!]
Nice to see you back in the
institution.
Everything Fred wrote about Christmas is true. This
is one of the many worldly festivals, and it is for everyone who is 'of the
world.'
There is a big difference between Fred's Christmas
and mine.
Fred is 'of the world', an atheist come humanist
and most probably "come realist" (then moving on to come naturist, because
then he'd have nothing left to believe). I am 'in the world' but not of it, do not have
a Christmas Tree
and am bringing my children up without this
icon. Fred's children enjoyed Christmas but then I made
sure mine did too, by giving. There is a big comparison with the presents
my children receive and with the presents I had when I was a child.
We weren't as wealthy in those days and on
unwrapping My step-father's present I found an empty box.
When I asked what kind of present this
was?
He replied, "It's an action man
deserter."
I bought my five year old son a set of golf
clubs, complete with bag and three wheel trolley.
He started playing at four years old,
when I took him to a local 'pitch and putt' course. Since then he's been such a keen golfer hitting the ball
completely in line with the flag, even if the ball went
only 20-30 yards.
He even beat me once, 3 shots to my 4. People are
amazed when they see him, and I point out to them that he's Tigger
Woods.
I could take Fred's article even further and
point out in the Old Testament where the tree has popped up
before:
Isaiah Ch:66 vs17.(King James version)
They that sanctify themselves, and purify
themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh,
and the abomination and the mouse, shall be consumed together saith the
LORD.
For me, a Christian is to take note of the second
commandment. The Bible says it, so why not do it?:
Exodus Ch:20 vs4.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or
any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth
beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
It's as simple as that.
Here are the usual questions I have thrown at
me.
1. Isn't a Christmas tree harmless in
church?
It appears to be. A spiked drink is not harmless,
but it is if one does not partake in it. Everyone always
testifies of the Pope as a harmless old man, but he is against Jesus
Christ and His written word. One cannot serve two masters.
2. Don't we have idols at home like statues
and toys?
Alright, so if I did manage to get an action man
when I was a young boy, wouldn't that be an idol? No, of course
not.
Christians serve God who is not seen. A tree or a
wooden cross is in the place of, or next to deity. God is jealous for His
reputation and will not share his glory with another, even a dumb
idol. Icons fix the peoples eyes away from what is the
one true God. 3. Aren't I
being a killjoy by not accepting Christmas trees?
I'm not a party pooper, I'm a party
popper by giving gifts to my family. I have to accept like Daniel did, that
while we are 'in the world' buried in tradition, we have a relationship with the
living God. When one is an outcast in one's own country like
Elijah was, we can remember what God said in 1Kings ch. 19
vs18:
"Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all
whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed
him."
4. Isn't it idols we have set up in the mind
that we should be
keeping ourselves from?
Yes it is. This is a hidden sin that can
be difficult to deal with. As a Christian discovers the battle
for the mind and looks for ways to deal with temptation, this makes
physical idols easier to deal with. It's difficult as it is for christians to
stand against temptation.
When a tree
is erected inside a church one wonders why this is difficult for
people not to do. Have they bowed to the pressures of man to please the
world rather than God? How much effort are they putting in on bringing down
the idols of the mind?
The Israelites were always grumbling. There came a
time when they rejected God and wanted to be led by a king just like the
surrounding nations. A king they could see, of flesh and blood. A king who
would rob them and do them harm. God told Samuel the prophet He will give
them their desire, so He gave them Saul. As
time went on, the Israelites rejected God until eventually, God hadn't
spoken to them for around four hundred years up until Christ.
The nativity play does not match up with the Bible.
Jesus was not born in a stable, there were no three kings and I don't think
there were shepherds watching their flocks around this time of the
year.
I put up with nativity plays because it is a
worldly production and after all, it is half true. But for me to put
up with the Christmas tree is totally unacceptable. I look in the
Bible to see if it lines up with God's will and find it
here: Jeremiah Ch:10 unacceptable-4. (King James
version)
Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at
the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs
of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of
the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with
gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. Even Fred wrote about it as coming from heathen
customs.
The one issue Fred did not get
right in his article was when he liberally used the sticky label,
"Christian." He put this label on anything he sought fit, even
bringing politics into the arena. What is written
in the Bible is written in the Bible. Jesus said His kingdom is not of this
world and whoever would follow Him, would forsake the things of the world.
Especially it's gods and non gods.
I will give Fred a proper label to start
putting on Christians, 'Bible Believers,' and I don't even mind being
called 'Bible Bashers.' The reason for this is, before becoming a
Christian, I moved in next door to a Christian named Basil. I called him a
'Bible Basher.' That was, until I accepted the call of God.
Now I will gladly take up the name.
Happy new year.
