Chris Carter Gets a Jump on the Crowd

By Tom Pain
Dec. 31, 2006

The NFL season ends this week and it will soon be time for awards to be handed out for individual accomplishments. While most sports analysts are still concentrating on the playoff contenders, Chris Carter has jumped the gun and made his early predictions for the individual honors.

He names LaDanian Tomlinson as his MVP, surprising no one. Marty Schottenhiemer of KC is his Coach of the Year. I would have picked Jeff Fisher. The Titans were 4-12 last year and lost their franchise quarterback, Steve McNair, in free agency. Yes, they lost the first 5 games this year, but they’ve now won 8 of 10 and will still have a chance at the playoffs on the last weekend. No one picked Tennessee to have even a winning record this year; they were a team of nobodies and a rookie quarterback.

What is the reason for Tennessee’s success? Let Chris Carter explain as he names his Rookie of the Year:

"Like MVP, this one is fairly easy – Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young. You're talking about a rookie quarterback that has won eight games with that team. If Tom Brady or Peyton Manning played for the Titans, how many games would they win? Nine? The Titans definitely aren't a 10-win team.

Perhaps just as impressive, Young didn't sneak into the spotlight. He came into the league with top billing and hasn't disappointed."

Reading his column, I was reminded of this hilarious U-K article posted earlier this year - Vince Young Will Be An NFL JOKE! – by Pat Hurley. Thinking himself more football savvy than every NFL General Manager, any of whom would have selected Young with the 3rd pick of the draft as Tennessee did, Mr. Hurley made this expert prediction:

"…when I watch Vince Young next season try to run for a first down on fourth and five with the game on the line. He will be squashed like a bug on the windshield of a Mercedes on the autobahn."

WooHoo!! Young sure proved Hurley wrong. In two different games this year, Young ran for what would be the baseball equivalent of the Walk-off Homer – one was a 36-yard touchdown run in overtime that instantly won the game, and the other was a 40-yard touchdown scamper on a 4th and 2.

When Hurley made this other ridiculous statement, I doubt even he could have guessed just how wrong he would be:

"It will be the last glory you <referring to Young> will ever experience again. Enjoy your last year in college. After that, you are way out of your league."

Yep, besides all that "glory" in college with the National Championship and Heisman, it looks like Young will have a little more glory coming his way to rub in Hurley’s face.

Let me make a prediction. Unlike Hurley, if I prove to be wrong, expect to read me on here admitting it – Hurley still claims Young is a joke. I predict that Vince Young will sweep the Rookie of the Year awards. He will win the official award, and he will be chosen by every significant writer, newspaper, or television analysts.

Vince Young, NFL Joke? I think it looks like Hurley is holding the real "Joke" in his hand, his keyboard.
