The Tower Of Babble (Captol Hill): Power Players Make Up A Strange Stew

By Timothy N. Stelly, Sr.
Dec. 31, 2006

Democrats are under the misguided assumption that Howard Dean’s leadership is responsible for the wave of popularity they are currently surfing. Such blindness can be cured if the party faithful realize that Charles Manson been head of the party, they still would have regained control of the Congress, due to Republican missteps, an unpopular war and a President who seems to be skateboarding with blinders on during these last two years of his “monarchy.”

Moreover, they key players in this new political ménage a quatre all suffer from the same polarizing malady. I’m referring to the Democrats two-headed monster of Dean and Nancy Pelosi, and Bush and Trent Lott. So while this lovefest appears to be good for America, it is but a m atter of time before the foreplay ceases and it’s back to politics as usual.

The end result of Bush’s lame duck status is indifference. Voters for our troops to slowly be withdrawn from what appears to be a Vietnam-like quagmire. Instead, King George wants to send more troops. Sadly, that is the reality American soldiers face. U.S. presence in the region is a requirement, at least if you let John Rendon and his cronies have their way. The recommendations of the Iraqi Study group are irrelevant, as our presence in the region will need to be expanded due to the inevitable war with Iran. Furthermore, as the watchdog for the Israelis, we can assume that at some point there will be a military debacle involving them. Of course, they will be relying on U.S. assistance.

Dean’s disdain for all things Republican has been well-documented, once referring to the party as “a culture of corruption.” (A phrase coined by federal judge Frederick Motz). Dean hopes that moving up the South Carolina and Nevada primaries to the same days as Iowa and New Hampshire, will be seen as a decision made to create diversity in the primary contest by increasing the numbers of black and Latino voters.

Pelosi’s liberal viewpoint aside, it was widely speculated that upon her ascension to the House Speaker position, that she would rally the troops to at least explore the idea of impeaching the President. I never saw impeachment as a possibility, because it reeked of payback for the GOP-led impeachment hearing of Bill Clinton. Since becoming House Speaker, Pelosi announced that “impeachment is off the table.” Had such an effort been put forth and failed, the Dems would surely pay in 2008.

As far as Israel is concerned, Pelosi’s position is clear: “America and Israel have an unbreakable bond in peace and war, prosperity and hardship.” Dean has flip-flopped on the Israeli issue several times. Salon.com reports, “While Dean vehemently criticizes Bush on a range of issues, when it comes to Israel, he told an audience at Iowa's Drake University in February, ‘The administration's guiding principles in the Middle East are the right ones. Terrorism against Israel must end. A two-state solution is the only path to eventual peace, but Palestinian territory cannot have the capability of being used as a platform for attacking Israel."

Just when you thought the GOP would rally their masses and dodge the political land mines set out by the Democrats, they again misstep and name the Imperial Wizard, Trent Lott, as Senate Minority whip. This after making what seemed like a committed and successful effort to lure more black voters into the party. This is the Trent Lott who was proud of his state for voting for Strom Thurmond for President in 1948, because as he put it: “Had the rest of the country followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over these years, either.”

At the time, Thurmond was the States’ Rights Democratic Party opposed integration, stating, “All the laws of Washington and all of the bayonets of the Army cannot force the negro into our homes, our schools, our churches.” After his death, it was revealed and confirmed that Lott fathered an out of wedlock child when he integrated his semen with the egg of a black woman. Talk about hypocrisy. Lott later apologized for his “poor choice of words,” but like most apologies, the shame-faced individual was more than likely sorry for being called on his faux pas.

Lott also has called for honoring Confederacy kingpin Jefferson Davis, and has links to the Council of Conservative cities—a group that is an offshoot of racist White Citizens’ Councils—or a half-step from the Klan. Thus, Lott couldn’t have alienated blacks more if he had pimp slapped Condoleezza Rice and then attempted to repeal all anti-lynching laws.

Poor George. His Iraqi invasion has been a disaster, and people are fleeing his bandwagon like rats from a sinking ship. Not too long ago, George was critical of another President’s war effort. In 1999, while serving as Governor of Texas, he had this to say about Bill Clinton’s strategy in Bosnia: ““Victory means exit strategy, and it’s important for the President to explain to us what the exit strategy is.” (“Ahhh, The Good Ol’ Days,” The Daily Kos, August 17, 2005). Holy hypocrisy, Batman!

Dean, Lott, Bush and Pelosi. What is the end result of this strange stew?

A gumbo over seasoned with pepper, that will make one’s eyes water. This is a gumbo that will soon boil over into partisan politics and a vicious back and forth that will rage throughout 2007 and continue until the next Presidential election. The languages will be confused, hypocritical and there’ll be flip-flopping a-plenty. This concoction will singe the palates of we, the diners and leave a bitter aftertaste.

As anyone who has ever added too much curry to a recipe can tell you, what smells good oftentimes doesn’t taste good. My fellow Americans, enjoy the quiet while you can. It’s about to get real funky up in here.
