Dec. 31, 2006 It's tragic, but it's true, most of history's monsters evade justice. Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Mengistu, Hitler, all avoided the punishment that they so richly deserved. Saddam Hussein will not be joining that list. The butcher of Baghdad, a man who responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, (maybe as many as a million) was hanged, as we all know by now. His reign was like his life, violent. He killed many before his reign, and once he came to power in 1979 the violence didn't stop. The ones he spared lived in constant terror. Anything could get them turned over to the secret police, even the suspicion that you were not a loyal Saddam supporter was enough to get you executed, or sent to one of his wonderful prisons. He was like an Arab version of Stalin. Paranoid and power hungry. And like Stalin he left his country a wreck. Most of his reign was spent waging war. War that didn't strengthen Iraq one bit. In 1980 he invaded Iran, as he viewed the Iranian revolution as a threat to his own ambitions. His invasion was a disaster, only with the support of western countries was he able to avoid a total defeat at the hands of a poorly equipped, and poorly trained Iranian force. He fought for eight years and accomplished nothing. Taking two years to catch his breath he invaded Kuwait. Despite having the fourth largest army in the world at the time he was routed by air and land. He spent the 1990's fighting sanctions, bribing UN officials, enriching himself, and letting his people suffer in poverty. It was fitting that such a low human being was dragged out of a hole by American soldiers. His last three years were spent in prison(being treated much better than he treated people under his rule), yelling at judges, making defiant speeches, and insisting that he was the rightful ruler of Iraq. Justice was finally served to the Iraqi people, who know that there torturer is gone for good. He's spending time with Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, and all the others(let's hope Bin Laden joins them soon) and maybe some dictators of the world will not sleep so soundly tonight. ------------ About the author: Craig Chamberlain has written more than 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
