Awaiting a Diagnosis

By Kristy Robinett
Dec. 29, 2006

I have been sick on and off for the past few months. The doctors were all confused and even a hospital visit revealed not much of anything. Every month, for the past three, on the exact same day, I had flu symptoms. My dad kept telling me that I couldn't keep getting the flu; that it was impossible. So what else was wrong?

I went to my OB/GYN yesterday for a follow up of a cyst that they found four months ago. It has changed and it doesn't look pretty. To put it in her exact words, "Kristy, this cyst doesn't look benign." Which left me only the opposite of that - the dreaded “C" word. I was quickly taken down to the lab for blood work to check tumor markers (CR-125), given an appointment with an Oncologist and am now awaiting a date for surgery to remove my left (and possibly right) ovary. And then a low chemo treatment.

I am 36 years old and for the most part take pretty good care of myself. I go to the doctor, I take my medication just as directed, I go to the gym twice a week and I watch what I eat (Ok..most of the time). Cancer doesn’t run in my family and yet here I am - scared and awaiting a diagnosis. It could be today, it could be next week.

The one thing that I do know, even with the tears streaming down my face in anticipation, is that I am a fighter.
