Christmas – A Matter Of Faith

By Skip Toomaloo
Dec. 24, 2006

A Christian who has studied his Bible knows that Jesus was not born in the Month of December. He also knows it makes no difference when Jesus became a human baby.

What mattered most to the world is that the human baby “grew and waxed strong” and at the age of thirty became a minister and a prophet before the people to explain the truths of God’s law and complete the work of mankind’s redemption.

There were shepherds who understood the message of the angel while there were wise men who remained at their studies; never coming to the realization of the truth contained in the advent of the virgin-born child. The wise men could read the words and advise the king. They could speculate, but they were never really sure of the words of the prophets.

Yet, there were some who knew what the heavenly signs pointed to. There were other wise men from further places that had seen the star denoting the birth and they knew God had fulfilled a great promise.

The child that grew became a mighty preacher; putting the local scribes, Pharisees and lawyers to shame in their poor interpretations of the Mosaic Law. He healed sick people. He gave sight to the blind. He gave legs to the cripple. He gave faith to the faithless and unbelieving.

The eyewitnesses of these wonderful events each took the time to speak of them and write their memories to proclaim a salvation that lived in flesh and now lives in spirit.

The physical mother of Jesus is honored because she accepted and overcame an event that could have easily brought her shame and death had not the man who took her as wife had the courage to accept his role. This physical father believed the words of the angel and acted in faith to secure the lives of his wife and new child; perhaps not fully understanding his particular role, but trusting the words of God’s messenger.

God’s messenger.

One of the parables of Jesus discusses a group of greedy servants who worked for a land owner who refused to return the land owner his due. The land owner sent other servants to collect his due and each servant sent was brutalized and sent packing by the greedy servants. The land owner then decided to send his own son; thinking the greedy servants would honor him and accept his authority. The greedy servants killed the son.

Sound familiar?

A few thousand years before Jesus, God sent many messengers with particular warnings and requests to his creation to simply listen, understand and act in faith; believing.

Eventually, after years of getting things wrong, God sent his son; again expecting understanding and acceptance. His son was crucified for teaching truth among men who cared not for the truth.

Does it matter what month or year or the fact that the Messiah was born into the family of a carpenter? What is significant is that Immanuel was born and he did fulfill his role as redeemer of humanity.

It is a matter of faith.
