I’m Just As Happy That There Was No Jesus

By Thomas Keyes
Dec. 24, 2006

I’m just as happy that there was no Jesus, at least in the sense of a divinity on Earth. Any mature, intelligent, objective person who reads the supposed utterances of Jesus in the New Testament will appreciate that they are full of wishful thinking and nonsense, which are hardly the hallmark of divinity. Some people, apparently for the sake of the approval of their relatives, family and friends, pretend to believe. Others just don’t have the mental software to cope with facts, tripping over their own feet as they prostrate themselves before the Lord.

As for the question of Jesus’ historicity as only a human being, there is no valid external evidence to corroborate the Gospels, but it doesn’t really matter. Since Jesus was not divine in any case, should we really care whether there was a man by that name who believed or of whom it was believed that he was God? We have people like that today. I personally have met several people who claimed to be God. Today, such people are considered crazy. In superstitious antiquity, they may have been shown a little more respect.

I take the same attitude towards crime as towards sin. Basically, legal statutes and religious injunctions have as their object the maintenance of peace and order. Often they agree with what common sense tells us. But there are cases when we must ignore them. No judge, lawyer, priest or minister can possibly know all the details that lead to the commission of a crime or a sin. Only the perpetrator has all the relevant facts at his fingertips. He is the one who must decide what to do in any given circumstance. For example, if a protected animal, like a moose, is rushing you, won’t you shoot if you have a gun, knowing that later you may be imprisoned and fined by a skeptical judge. If a rapist attacks you, won’t you strike him with a lead pipe if you have one, even knowing that later, before the judge, he may swear he didn’t attack you, thereby exposing you to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon? You simply have to decide for yourself.

Anyway, that’s the way I see things. I feel competent to decide my own course of action at any time and place. I don’t need to appeal to the authority of some paternal figure for guidance. Even if I am violating a a law or a commandment, I’ll do things my way, paying the consequences if I have to.

I’ve read the Gospels several times. I know that the parable of the Lilies of the Field just isn’t true. If we take no thought for tomorrow, we just will not live. There’s no God who makes sure that we have what we need tomorrow, providing only that we have sought the kingdom of Heaven . I know that if you enclose yourself in your closet to pray, unlike those who make a spectacle of prayer, you have no greater assurance that your prayers will be heard. In fact, those who pray get no more than those who scoff at prayer. No amount of prayer will enable anyone to move Mount Aconcagua into the Pacific Ocean . I have $5000 for anyone who can come to Argentina and prove me wrong.

I’m just as glad that the Gospels are a myth. I have other things to worry about, without the Gospels.
