Civil War in Iraq--Not Such a Bad Thing!

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
Dec. 23, 2006

The media has been tripping over itself in anticipation of declaring a civil war in Iraq, apparently considering this a bad thing. But even if true, it isn't harmful to American interests.

In 2004, Al Qaeda decided to make western Iraq its main headquarters. They began striking deals with the Sunni chiefs and their tribesmen. Iraq is organized much as the Indian tribes of North America were, with tribes and tribal chiefs, and the tribesmen more loyal to their own tribe than to the country of Iraq. Al Qaeda promised to cooperate with the Sunni tribes, with the Baathists and Saddam loyalists, to drive out the Americans. But the situation quickly deteriorated from Al Qaeda's standpoint.

First, Al Qaeda leadership thought that the Sunni tribesmen were not fighting the Americans aggressively enough and began turning their violence against the Sunni tribes, threatening them and even murdering some Sunni chiefs who were not sufficiently fanatic Muslims or too pacific in attacking American forces. The Sunni tribes began turning more and more away from Al Qaeda and toward the central government in Baghdad. It wasn't long before the pro-government and anti-government forces were warring. And gradually the pro-government Sunni tribes are winning and more tribes turning away from Al Qaeda. Thus there is a civil war in western Iraq, and it is favoring the central government and the USA.

Despite Al Zawahiri's recent bragging that it was Al Qaeda that won the 2006 election in America and that the Democrats should be negotiating surrender with Al Qaeda, it appears that Al Qaeda is diminishing as a terrorist force, not only because the CIA, FBI, and US military have been so successful in spy operations and in simply killing or capturing them, but because Al Qaeda is losing the support of Sunni Arabs in Iraq. Iraqi police recruiting was going slowly at first, but now there are thousands of the Sunni tribesmen volunteering to become policeman and help drive Al Qaeda and terrorists out of their areas. Since much of the violence in Iraq is centered on the old Baathist triangle, the Sunni strongholds, it is clearly great news that the Sunnis are turning against the terrorists. Much of the current violence in that region consists of bombs supplied by Iran. The Sunnis have an overwhelming interest in combating the Shia infiltrators and militia, as they know that the US Army is the only thing preventing their massacre. Not that, in a karmic fashion, they don’t deserve it, since they spent the last 40 years killing and torturing the Shia and Kurds, but at least now they have joined the right side of the fight for Iraq’s independence and a stable, democratic government.

It is so bad for Al Qaeda, in fact, that Al Qaeda has been withdrawing from Iraq and turning its attention back toward Afghanistan. You haven’t heard that in the mainstream media, have you? Let’s hear it for civil war in Iraq! It’s driving Al Qaeda out!

If we can prevent the Democrats from surrendering and keep motoring down the counter-terrorist road, it appears that there is an excellent chance for a win for the Iraqi people and the USA in the offing. One should note that the US Army's battles against the Indian tribes of North America persisted from the end of the Civil War till years after the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. That's over 11 years. Warfare against dispersed tribes is not easy. But if we had given up after Custer's Last Stand, you might all be speaking Oglala Sioux right now and eating buffalo entrails (boudin). Aren’t you glad that, after the Fetterman Massacre and Little Big Horn, we didn’t give up?

Hopo, hookahey! H'gun, h'gun!
