Congratulations Jennifer Hudson - A True American Idol!

By Carla Young Nix
Dec. 23, 2006

I am so happy for Jennifer Hudson on being nominated for a Golden Globe award for BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS in the movie “Dream Girls”.

I feel as though I know Jennifer, yet I don't know her at all. I watched her with great admiration and absolute awe as she competed on American Idol in 2004. All I can say is THAT GIRL CAN SANG!!! I loved her and I loved her attitude as she went through the weekly "ordeal" of having to face Simon, Randy, and Paula for their "approval". As it goes, it seems that it matters what they think; particularly mean ol' Simon! But, Jennifer took it all in stride, it seems. For she KNEW that she could sing. Simon, who just didn't seem to get it, would say STUPID stuff like, "you're over singing". What Simon didn't get was that Jennifer is a powerhouse, a true singer, a real diva! She is, in my humble opinion, of the caliber of Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, and we can't forget Jennifer Holiday. Those sisters can BLOW!

Simon even blasted Jennifer about her weight. He insisted that she was too large to be a star. She didn’t have the look, in his rotten opinion. Wait a minute. What’s that I hear? Hmmm, sounds like Jennifer saying, “Look at me now!” to an irritating Simon!

How ironic and perfect that Jennifer Hudson is being recognized for a role made famous on Broadway by powerhouse singer Jennifer Holiday some 25 years ago! The Jens’ have it! Who better to play that role, and sing, "And I'm Telling You, I'm Not Going!" Who better? I can't wait to see the movie.

So......our Jennifer did not need the approval of Simon to make her mark. She only needed the exposure, and I am so happy that somebody had the good sense to recognize that.

This is also a great reminder for all of us. We may not be competing for American Idol. We may not be entertainers. We may not be singers. But, there are many things that we are striving to do in our lives. We all have our own gifts and talents and we have the drive and passion to carry them out. Whatever they may be, we should not become discouraged when the Simons in our lives stand before us and just not get it! What Simon says does not make you (and it did not make Jennifer) who you really are. Never lose sight of your goals. Never forget who you are. And do even still as Jennifer. I don't recall her fighting and arguing with Simon because he didn't recognize who and what she was. She knew what was in her and what God was pulling out of her. Her experience with American Idol was still successful because it brought her to a new level that resulted in going to yet another level. It was just a stepping stone, even with the stumbling block!

Thank you for this lesson, dear Jennifer. And congratulations and best wishes to you. I pray that God will further bless you and continue to let everyone know the strength and power that is within you. And may you continue to bless us with your gifts.
