Speaking of Jesus

By Skip Toomaloo

Jesus told his disciples that when he went away he would send another individual that would help begin and spread the good news over the world. This individual would be the Holy Spirit. Jesus called him the “Comforter”. This “Comforter” would “teach them all things, and bring all things to their remembrance”. This “Comforter” would guide them into all truth. This “Comforter” would not speak of himself, but would only speak to the glory of God and the faith in Messiah.

Jesus did not lie.

The scriptures tell us that on the day of Pentecost, the disciples, among a small group of believers were praying in an upper room and waiting. It was on that day the Holy Ghost came upon this group and began the indwelling of those who would be “sealed” and “adopted” into the family of God. This group became the core of all future believers.

Jesus also told his men that they would be able to discern between those who believed and those who did not.

It isn’t too difficult these days to see unbelievers. Many are very proud in their unbelief of Jesus. Many scoff. Many curse those of us who do understand the truths of scripture. They call us the ignorant. They think us the bigot.

They could not be more wrong.

Paul wrote to the Corinthian Church: “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.” (1 Corinthians 12:3)

Jesus is Lord.

I can only write that statement because I believe. Jesus is indeed Lord of my life. I have entrusted my eternity into his hands. He, in turn has given me the Comforter. The Comforter is a real presence in my life.

Those who reject such statements simply do not understand because they do not know God. They are not indwelt by the Spirit so they cannot spiritually reason with the truth of God’s existence.

I cannot curse Jesus. This is a testament to the indwelling Spirit also. It is the Holy Ghost that speaks to me and through me every day. The words of scripture are ready to hand and to heart.

The cultist puts Jesus on the lesser table. The cultist may claim a prominent religious standing for the Christ, but that is not who Jesus is. John was ready to write: “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was the life, and that life was the light of men…and the Word became flesh and we beheld his glory, that of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (From John Chapter One)

The Word who became flesh was named “Immanuel” – meaning “God with us”. This is who Jesus is. He is God. His is not just God the Son. He is God. He is not just a prophet or a rabbi or a human carpenter. He is God. This can only be said by one who is indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus once asked his men: “What think ye of the Christ – whose son is he?”

The answers were various but Peter spoke: “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” And this answer was not insignificant. Peter spoke what the Pharisees might have considered a blasphemy. Peter equated Jesus with the True God of Heaven.

In answer to a taunt from a group of Jews concerning a point of pride, exclaiming: “We are children of Abraham!” Jesus replied, “Before Abraham was, I am.” This was a statement that caused the people to attack Jesus because he had dared to take the name of the great “I Am” upon himself.

I do not struggle with such thoughts. Jesus is the truth. He explained the law and the prophets as those who testified of him hundreds of years prior to his first advent. Those prophesies were fulfilled. I have no reason to believe God will not therefore fulfill the promises concerning his second advent.

I cannot stress enough that before faith I was unable to write such things. I was trapped in unbelief, unsure of any god.

I can honestly say that Jesus is God because he was faithful to his promise to seal me in his Spirit. I understand God’s word only because the teacher and trainer indwells my poor frame and explains the meaning behind the many prophesies and histories written in the scriptures. They only all make sense in the light of the life and times of the living God and my Lord Jesus Christ.

We do not fear the cultist or the atheist. We endeavor to teach them.

In this day men are truly born again. They place Jesus in his proper position as Lord of life. He deserves no scorn or lessening of position because it is the Law of Christ that has replaced the “law of ordinances” that was “nailed to his cross”. The law of Christ states that the first law is to love God. While the second; as important, is to “love thy neighbor as thyself”. In these two said Jesus, are contained “all the law and the prophets”.

I am sure that this column too will bring scoffing and scorn and perhaps some type of response from the cultists. But even that is expected: “If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.” (1 Peter 4:14)

Reproach is another proof of the indwelling Spirit. Jesus said his own would be hated by the world and greatly misunderstood. We never fear of that because we know the world hated Jesus long before we suffered the world’s hatred.

The sad and unimaginable point is, for the born again, spiritually indwelt people of Jesus who only express and explain love, such explanations are so greatly misunderstood that the only answer of the cultist or the atheist is: “Crucify him!”

Please have a Great Christmas Holiday and enjoy only God’s best blessings into the New Year.
