Grizzlies, Black Bears, and Teddy Bears, Oh My!!!

By Joy Taylor
Dec. 18, 2006

I would just like to say for the record, I find it incredibly frustrating to try to comment on an article and cannot. I also spent hours one day trying to register, only to find that within minutes someone had taken my name and trashed it. Most of us aren't here for that kind of abuse, and most of us aren't capable of abusing. I think the outcome for UK is well worth the extra security.

I don't think we need a writer of the year anymore than we need Golden Globes, Grammy's etc., it is subjective, it is a popularity contest, and as witnessed in the rebuttals, few have the ability to look beyond a difference of opinion to the true talent of the writer.

I do not read every article, and if I am honest, just the bold letters of some contributors names save me a ton of time because no matter how intriguing the title, I know it will be the same angry words, just a new target.

I love words, and happening upon one I don't know sends me to the dictionary, or to my cell phone to leave a message for myself to look it up when I get a chance. We have a few belletrists on board :), at UK, and some so bright they couldn't dummy down if they had to. I know that Brooks M. could write that way if he wanted to, he chooses to provoke thought rather than a run for Funk & Waggonal. It has been my experience that the best communicators on earth do it by reaching us, not with big words, but with big thoughts.

I love reading Steve D., and have enjoyed his honesty, soul, family, friends, and boss-exposing words immensely. His thoughts on addiction have helped me to understand some folks I can't avoid that are addicted. In fact, I forwarded a recent article to my much brighter sister, because her son, my dear nephew, is one of the aforementioned who cannot be avoided. I was very surprised when she told me she just couldn't wrap her brain around it.

What I found brilliant, she had to put off until morning and a good cup of coffee. Subjective yes, but I also had the benefit of reading Steve's first articles on UK, when he exposed his soft bellied vulnerability, and guts.

Patrick H. is probably the writer I identify with most. He cares about the world, the people in it, and you have to read for a while to figure out what his politics are. I like that.

The intent of this was not to lobby for a vote for one writer over another. As much as I hate to admit this, I actually voted once on American Idol. Harmless, and an honor to one contributor on UK, why not? I feel much stronger about voting off one writer, but that comes later.

We have our grizzlies, who would eat their own, our black bears who will fight and claw if you cross the line, and our teddy bears who do no harm, and should frankly be left the alone.

This year my vote, provided I am allowed to vote, will go to Brooks Mick. I do enjoy his articles, I don't always agree with him, but for myself and some others I suspect, he took action that saved UK. By the way, he also put me onto the best car wax I have ever found.

You can't negotiate with terrorist, you just can't. When asked about forgiving terrorist, General Swartzkoph once said, " Forgiveness is God's job, our's is to arrange the meeting". If you have been around for a while you will know exactly what I am talking about. We could vote for most prolific writer, that would be math. We could vote for most antagonistic, peacemaker, biggest word user, or sappiest (that would probably be me), but I am going to say out loud I am voting for Brooks Mick because he proved you can stop evil. Evil is subjective as well, but let's just say my definition is something like NBC's favorite subject, or "who will show up at your home with condoms & liquor for your 12 year old".

Wouldn't it be fascinating if like the right to vote, people who have no limits, who offend the defenseless, could be banned from the internet forever. Three strikes and your OFF LINE. There would be no need for perverted justice and the like, and UK proved it is possible. Since we can all get a ticket for speeding and running red lights, without a single human witness, no harm, no foul is no longer. So maybe those who foul for fouls sake should have to get back to their Underwood's, and get past an editor, just a thought.

I do not know who you all are, but I know that others were responsible for the changes that made UK a better place to write. They like Brooks M., and Pat H. probably wrote fewer articles this year, because of the efforts in the rebuttal section. Hey thanks to you all, and in my humble opinion you should collectively be "writer of the year".
